Senior Ryan Smith has run thousands of miles since joining the cross country team as an eighth grader. He logged miles early every morning on hot summer days, on vacation, and after school. Years of training prepared Ryan well for Saturday’s AAAA State Championship at Sandhills Research Center in Columbia.

Saturday, November 7th, was 78 degrees and humid at start time (not ideal race conditions). Ryan started out strong, hovering around 35th place by mile 1. He passed a lot of runners throughout the race, moving to 18th place by mile 2. He felt strong and pushed really hard to finish 8th overall with a time of 16:04, passing 8 runners in the last half mile.

The awards ceremony was the fastest on record as torrential rains poured over the crowd. Jackson Ellenburg (Ashley Ridge) won the boys 4A individual title for the second year in a row. Wando beat Wade Hampton in the team contest by only 5 points. Ryan Smith was named to All-State  for the third year in a row. Additionally, he and Emma Driggers were selected to run with the 30th Mike Moore Shrine Bowl Run team. The runners will carry the game balls from the Shriners Hospital in Greenville to Gibbs Stadium on the campus of Wofford College in Spartanburg.=
