Storm Delay, 4th Quarter Spoil Mavs Home Opener

Mauldin broke out their brand new home gray uniforms for Friday nights home opener versus Laurens.  Mother nature broke out its gray as well, in the form of lightning, rain and a nearly hour storm delay in the 3rd quarter.

It wasn't so much a tale of two halves for the Mavs, so much as it was a tale of pre-storm and post-storm.  Pre-storm Mauldin found themselves in a back and forth battle, which they took control of with a 27-20 lead until the storms rolled in with 7:18 left in the 3rd.  Post-storm it was all Laurens as the Raiders rattled off 21 stratight points to take the victory.

Logan Edwards fumbled on Mauldin's first play from scrimmage, setting up a 12 play scoring drive that gave Laurens a 6-0 lead.  Edwards would reclaim the lead for the Mavs on a 1-yd TD run with point after for a 7-6 Mavs lead in the 1st.

The 2nd quarter featured more back and forth action, with the Raiders returning a Dre Harris interception 75 yards for a 13-7 lead.  After a Hunter Beaudoin punt pinned Laurens inside their own 5 yard line, Jonathan Strubel recovered a fumbled hand-off and set the Mavs up with great field position from the 10.  Edwards would tally his second TD one play later for the 14-13 lead.  Laurens would counter with a 10 play drive and a 20-14 lead.  The Raiders forced the Mavs to punt, but muffed the fair catch which was recovered by Mauldin.  Five plays later Dre Harris rushed into the end zone from 10 yards out to tie the score at 20, after the missed PAT, heading to halftime.

Laurens received the 2nd half kick-off, but fumbled after a drive into Mavs territory.  Pinned back with a 3rd down and  29, Drequan Harris pulled some magic out of his hat, avoiding the Raider rush and scrambling away to find Taz Richardson for an 83 yard TD.

The tide seemed to be turning to the Mavs favor and then the storms came.  After the stadium was cleared for lightning, the teams took refuge inside the school.  After a nearly hour wait, the teams retook the field around 10:30 pm and Laurens took complete control of the game.  After a 60 yd TD catch tied the score, Laurens got a 72 yd TD run on its next possession to take back the lead.  The game was pretty much sealed on the Mavs next possession, when Harris threw his second pick six of the game to make the score 41-27.  The Mavs would drive to the Laurens 8 yard line, but were unable to convert on 4th down and Laurens was able to run out the clock.
