Mavs Ride Defense, Running Game to Victory

The Mavs took the opening kick and marched to the Wildcat 11 yard line before Dre Harris was picked off in the end-zone.  The Mavs defense held and forced a Woodmont punt, which was fumbled by Hunter Dawsey, setting up the Wildcats at the Mavs 26 yard line.  One play later the Mavs found themselves trailing 7-0 after a 26 yard TD throw by Woodmont.

Mauldin would punt on its 2nd possession.  The Mavs defense got a 3 and out, three negative yards plays aided by a bad Wildcat snap resulting in a 20 yard loss.  The Mavs would start their third drive with excellent field position and senior RB Logan Edwards would capitalize with a 5-yard TD run.  The failed 2-pt copnversion made it 7-6 Woodmont after one quarter.

After trading punts to start the 2nd quarter, the Mavs started to take control of the game.  Edwards would find the end-zone again on a 28-yard TD run, making the score 12-7 after a second failed 2-pt try.  The defense forced Woodmont to keep punting, and the Mavs would extend their lead late in the 2nd after a 34 yard scramble by sophomore QB Dre Harris set Edwards up for his third TD of the game, a 1 yard plunge and a 19-7 halftime lead.

The 2nd half started much the way the 2nd quarter ended, a defensive stop and the Mavs going 61 yards for a TD, capped by a Harris 15 yard run to make the score 26-7.  The Mavs were driving on their next possession before Harris was picked for the second time, this time on the 4 yard line going in.  Following the turnover, the Mavs defense made the Wildcats pay for the poor field position when Jonathan Strubel sacked the Wildcat QB on the first play for a safety and a 28-7 lead.  The Mavs would fail on a FG attempt on the ensuing possession.

To start the 4th quarter the Mavs drove to the Wildcat 18 yard line, but again Harris was picked in the end-zone, his third INT of the night.  Woodmont would turn that turnover into a one play 80 yard TD run to cut the lead to 28-14.  After a failed onside attempt by Woodmont, the Mavs started on the Woodmont 43.  Senior Daniel Bone replaced Harris and a fumbled hand-off exchange resulted in the Mavericks fifth turnover of the night.  This time Woodmont's one play drive ended with a DeAndre Epps interception.  Daniel Bone hit Taz Richardson for 27 yards, putting the Mavs inside the Wildcat 35 yard line.  But on 3rd and 10 Bone was picked in the end-zone, the sixth turnover and fourth interception of the night.  The Mavs defense sealed the victory with an interception by Wynston Howard and a fumble recovery by Shaihai Stukes on Woodmont's final two possessions.

Senior RB Logan Edwards carried the ball 31 times for 147 yards and three touchdowns.  Dre Harris added 15 carries for 116 yards and a score, but had the three INT's.  On the flip side, the Mavs defense forced four turnovers, recovering two fumbles and interceptions by Howard and Epps
