Mauldin opened the 2014 football season on the road at Golden Strip rival Hillcrest.  It was a perfect night for football!  Well, right up until the opening kick, which Hillcrest squibbed, catching the Mavericks off-guard and giving the Rams offense great field position after recovering the onside attempt.  Six plays later the Rams punched in the games opening score from the 1 yard line for an 8-0 lead after a successful 2-point attempt.  The Mavs moved their first possession into Rams territory, but stalled out and were forced to punt.  CB Ozell Lloyd intercepted an errant Rams pass at the 35 yard line, but the Mavs went 4 and out and were unable to capitalize on great field position.  Hillcrest took advantage and marched 65 yards to go up 14-0 and seize control of momentum at the end of the 1st quarter.

The Mavs opened the 2nd quarter by fumbling the ball near mid-field, which the Rams turned into a 21-0 lead.  On the ensuing possession, Drequan Harris was picked on the first play of the drive and the Rams punched it in for a 28-0 lead. Hillcrest then blocked a punt and recovered on the 25 yard line.  Five plays later it was 35-0 Hillcrest at the half.

The Mavs opened the 2nd half with an onside which they recovered, but an illegal touch gave the Rams offense excellent field position.  The Rams went 49 yards in two plays for a 41-0 lead.  Late in the 3rd quarter, guard Matt Lysek found himself lying on top of a loose fumble in the endzone for the only Mauldin TD.

Hillcrest would hold on for the 41-7 lead.  Mauldin got 86 yards rushing from Senior RB Logan Edwards and Ozell Lloyd had 5 tackles, an interception and several deflections for the Mav defense.  Mauldin travels to Woodmont next Friday, where they'll try and rebound from a tough opening night.
