Girls Swim Team Starts Season with Two Wins

 

Mauldin hosted Byrnes and Spartanburg at the Middle Tyger YMCA in Duncan on August 19th for the first meet of the season and they started it off right with a win in the 200 Medley Relay.  The relay team of Jodi Ogle, MaKayla Brooks, Lindsey Neale, and Savannah Gaido swam over 4 seconds faster than the second place team from Spartanburg, achieving a state cut in the process. Then Sophomore Emma Knapp swam to a first place finish and added another state cut for the Mavs in the 200 Freestyle.  In the next girls event, the 200 IM, Junior MaKayla Brooks touched the wall first and also attained a state cut.  Keeping the 1st place streak going for the girls, Savannah Gaido delivered in the 50 Free.  Scoring more points for the girls in the next event was Sarah Young with a second place finish in the 100 Buterfly.  Brooke Williams started another string of 1st place finishes for the girls in the 100 Freestyle, followed by Emma Knapp in the 500 Free, and MaKayla Brooks in the 100 Backstroke, with Knapp and Brooks achieving two more state cuts.  The relay team of Brooke Williams, Emma Knapp, Savannah Gaido, and MaKayla Brooks won the 400 Freestyle Relay event to finish off the meet.  

The team has been practicing hard and it paid off at this meet.  It takes the whole team to be victorious, and they were!  The relay team of Sarah Young, Sarah Driggers, Emma Knapp, and Lizzy Burnett finished 3rd against Spartanburg and 2nd against Byrnes.  Scoring points in the 200 Freestyle, Kelsy Grogan and Lizzy Burnett finished 3rd and 4th respectively.  Sara Driggers and Lindsey Skidmore added more points in the 200 IM with 3rd and 4th place finishes against Spartanburg, and 4th and 5th against Byrnes.  The 50 Free was a great event for the girls with Brooke Williams and Abby Stephens swimming to 2nd and 3rd place against Byrnes and 3rd and 4th against Spartanburg.  Lindsey Neale and Jodi Ogle added more points for the girls in the 100 Butterfly touching the wall 3rd and 4th against both teams.  In the 100 Free, Lizzy Burnett and Maggie Wood achieved 2nd and 3rd place against Byrnes and 3rd and 4th against Spartanburg.  Kimberly Rush scored more points for the girls in the 500 Free.  The 200 Freestyle Relay Team of Brooke Williams, Bella Kelly, Kelsy Grogan, and Lizzy Burnett finished 1st against Spartanburg and 2nd against Byrnes.  Jodi Ogle had an overall 2nd place in the 100 Backstroke and Sarah Young had a 3rd place finish against Spartanburg, and a 4th place finish against Byrnes in the same event.  Finishing 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the 100 Breaststroke against both teams were Sarah Driggers, Lindsey Skidmore, and Kelsy Grogan.  The 400 Yard Freestyle Relay team of Sarah Young, Lindsey Neale, Sarah Driggers, and Jodi Ogle was second to touch the wall against Byrnes and third against Spartanburg.
