Ryan Smith-Fastest MHS State Time at Sandhills

(Columbia, SC) -- Ryan Smith finished a successful cross country season at the SCSHL State Championship at Sandhills. Race conditions were perfect at the 10:30 start.

Ryan started strong and stayed with the front pack of runners for the first mile. Several runners, including Jackson Ellenburg (Ashley Ridge) and Avery Dominick (Dutch Fork), pulled ahead of the lead pack heading down the hill. Ryan stayed strong and powered up the hill before the two-mile mark.

With less than one mile to go, Ryan was nowhere near the front. He pushed hard and passed six runners to claim fourth place (15:50.59), a fraction of a second in front of Avery Dominick (15:50.70). Ryan's time is the fastest time ever run on the Sandhills course by a Mauldin runner. Chad Holt held the previous record with 15:59 in 2005 when he placed 1st at the State meet.

Jackson Ellenburg, a sophomore from Ashley Ridge, won the individual 4A race (15:28.54). Riverside High School won the men's and women's team competitions.
