Eye Opener Invitational

The 2014 Eye Opener Cross Country Meet was held at the Roger Milliken Research Center in Spartanburg on Friday night and Saturday morning. College students ran Friday night. High school students represented eighty-one high schools including schools from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. The races were broken up into three categories: International, Champion, and JV with boys and girls running separate races. There were 3,115 entries for the high school athletes.

The winner of the International Race was Tanis Baldwin from East Henderson High who ran a 5K in 15:35. Mauldin high junior, Ryan Smith was the first Mav with an 8th place finish of 16:30. Another noteworthy performance was that of Jake Crow, an eighth grader, who ran a 17:44 race for his first high school race. (That’s really fast!)

The visiting guest this year was Bill Rodgers -- a former American record holder in the marathon, including four straight victories in the Boston Marathon. His 5K record is 13:42.00!!
