Winning the tip, Mauldin had a tentative start to play. Both teams exchanged baskets for a while, but Mauldin pulled it out with 2 from #10 La’Daisa Johnson, #11 Caitland Considine, and #21 Makayla Green each. Coming off the bench, #14 Marshaye Leake put back a pair of lay-ups. The first quarter ended with a score of 11 to 4 for the Lady Mavs.

Both teams were struggling with the referees calling them for traveling with the ball. The turnover count was very high on both sides. Unfortunately, Mauldin struggled from the foul line making only 3 points from 7 shots versus the Riverside’s 8 points from 12 shots. The only basket Riverside made from the field was #31’s 3-pointer. #10 La’Daisa Johnson made a beautiful 3-pointer for her only shot of the quarter for her. #11 Caitland Considine scored a basket while being fouled and called. #24 Dah’Vielle Lucas scored a basket. #21 Makayla Green also scored 2 points. It was 23 to 17 at the half. Note that both teams scored 13 points in the second quarter.

After the half, Mauldin improved a bit from the line, but not enough to do better than tie the Lady Warriors in scoring in the 3rd quarter. #10 La’Daisa Johnson scored both foul shots after being fouled shooting. #11 Caitland Considine, who really had a lot of smiles and had fun in this game, scored 2 from the field and 2 of 4 from the line. She had a very nice steal near the end of the quarter. #15 Walisha Brown made a beautiful “nothing but net” 3-pointer which was only her second shot in the game. The 3rd quarter score was 32 to 26 for Mauldin with another tie of 9 points scored for each team.

Picking up the tempo, hustle and fun, the Lady Mavs turned up the volume. Everybody on the team got time on the court too. So here is a list of the team and what they contributed to the win.

10 La’Daisa Johnson: 1 foul shot, a steal and a defensive rebound.

11 Caitland Considine: 4 points from the field, an assist, and 3 rebounds.

12 Khalia Shaw: While she was hurt in the first half, she cheered her team on on her way to see the doctor with a very brave smile on her face.

13 Alexis Williams: took off a shot in the last moments of the game.

14 Marshaye Leake: 2-point put back lay-up.

15 Walisha Brown: ran the point running our offense.

20 Antonia Thomas: played earlier in the game getting a rebound and 2 jump-balls with her tenacious hustle!

21 Makayla Green: 4 points and 2 rebounds showing a lot of command and control in the key.

23 Rachel Jones: played earlier in the game too with a steal and a jump ball.

24 Dah’Vielle Lucas: had a tough time with bad calls from the referees early on, she got a steal in the 4th quarter.

30 Grayson Bowie: a rebound and a shot

32 Deja Harrison: got into the thick of things right away and should have been called getting a tough foul when she was passed the ball.

33 Abigail Hurwitz: a rebound and great post-up.

The final score was 43 Mauldin to 34 Riverside. It was a nice job coaching and sportsmanship on both sides of the court.
