Mauldin welcomed Gaffney to Freeman Field for a Region II-AAAA showdown.  Gaffney got on the board first with a 4 yd TD run.  Dre Massey would answer with a 36 yd TD run and the Mavs took a 7-6 lead.  The Mavs tried a surprise onside on the ensuing kick-off but the Indians recovered.  However, Charles Freeman would recover a fumble two plays later setting up an 8-yd TD run by Massey.  The Mavs again would try the surprise onside and this time Freeman would recover for Mauldin. Massey would score his third TD of the 1st quarter on a 19-yd run and the Mavs would take a 21-6 lead at the end of one.

On the second play of the 2nd quarter, Gaffney would fumble the pitch and Charles Freeman would scoop it up and race 58 yards for a 28-6 Maverick lead.  The Indians would answer with a 2-yd score.  Taz Richardson would race 53 yards to set up Beau Craft for an 11-yd TD run.  Gaffney again would answer with a 5-yd score.  Both defenses would hold and Mauldin received the ball with 45.9 seconds remaining in the half.  Taz Richardson made an amazing, one handed, diving catch for 39 yards which would set up Johnathan Castle for a 20-yd field goal and the Mavs took a 38-21 halftime lead.

Gaffney came right out in the 2nd half and scored to cut the lead to ten.  Dre Massey would answer with an 11-yd score of his own.  Massey's run was set-up by a huge 4th and 13 conversion, from Massey to Parker Wyatt. Gaffney's Shaq Davidson would connect on TD's of 49 and 79 yards on the Indians next two possessions to cut the lead to 45-42.  Massey would score from 2-yds out to make the lead ten again with 7:43 left in the 4th.  The Indians would answer.  Massey then scored from 17 yds giving the Mavs a 59-49 lead.  In the final 1:39, Gaffney would score, recover an onside kick and score again to take a 63-59 lead.  Mauldin would get the ball down to their own 26 yard line, but were unable to score as the Indians held on for the narrow victory.

Dre Massey carried the ball 33 times for 272 yards and six touchdowns.  He also completed 26/41 for 279 yards.  Massey's 272 yards rushing is a school record and his six touchdowns tie a record he set last year.  Massey also set the MHS record for attempts and completions.  12 of those completions went to Taz Richardson (166 yds receiving), also a school record.  The Mavericks 587 yards of total offense also set a school record.

The Mavs fall to 4-3 and will travel to Riverside next Friday.  Go Mavs!
