Big Plays End Mavs Season

11/16/2013, 6:30pm EST
By @MavsMauldin

Mauldin left school early to head to Sumter for a AAAA Division 1 1st round playoff game.  On the way down, the Mavs offensive bus broke down outside of Columbia and the breakdowns continued all night for Mauldin.

After a scoreless 1st quarter that saw very little offensive production from either side, the Mavs finally got on the board with a 15 yard pass from Dre Massey to Beau Craft.  Mauldin would stretch the lead to 14-0 after Massey raced 66 yards for a score.  The Mavs had a chance to almost put the game away after the defense gave the offense great field position on the plus-47 yard line.  However, the offense went 3 and out and Massey took the shotgun snap and pooch punted the ball, which SUmter partially blocked, scooped up and raced 79 yards for a touchdown.  On their next possession the Gamecocks would tie the game on a 56-yd TD run.  Massey's last second heave to CJ Thomas came up 1-yard short of the endzone as time expired in the 1st half.

On the opening kick-off of the 2nd half, Mauldin's big play breakdowens would continue as Sumter got the edge and took the return 80 yards for their first lead of the night 21-14.  On their next possession they would extend the lead to 28-14 to end the 3rd.

Jason Labrador would score from 2 yards out to open the 4th, but Sumter answered with a 25 yard TD pass and held a 35-21 lead.  Mauldin would need to convert two 4th downs, including an improbable 31 yard TD on 4th and 24 to cut the Gamecock lead to 35-27.  Mauldin's defense would hold, giving the Mavs one last shot but Massey's was stripped of the ball trying to make a deep throw as time expired and Sumter returned the loose ball 66 yards for the 41-27 final.

Dre Massey finished his playing career going 35/60 for 325 yards and two TD's.  The 60 attempts and 325 yards are both single game records.  Massey also rushed 21 times for 116 yards, giving him 2043 yards rushing and 34 TD's on the season.  He also threw for 2793 yards and 28 TD's.  An all-time great season!

CJ Thomas finished his Mauldin career with 16 catches for 157 yards and Senior Beau Craft caught three balls for 40 ayrds and a score.

Mauldin finished its record setting season 7-5.  Go Mavs!

Mavs Get Big Win at Spartanburg

11/02/2013, 12:45am EDT
By @MavsMauldin

As the regular season winds down and playoff seedings are on the line, the Mauldin Mavericks traveled to Wofford College to take on the Spartanburg Vikings and come home with an impressive 56-42 win.

The Vikings took the early 7-0 lead on a 25 yard passing touchdown.  Mauldin would answer when Dre Massey scored from 8 yards out to make it 7-7.  Spartanburg scored the next 14 points after blocking a Maverick punt to set up a 4 yard scoring run and the Mavs found themselves down 21-7 on the road early in the game.

Massey would find CJ Thomas for a 9 yard score to cut the lead to 21-14 early in the 2nd quarter.  After the defense forced a punt, Mauldin would go 91 yards in 16 plays to cut the Vikings lead to 21-20.  Ronald Cespedes would keep the score at 21-20 at half catching an interception while lying on his back at 6 yard line at the end of the 2nd quarter.

Spartanburg took the opening possession of the 2nd half and increased their lead to 27-20.  Sophomore Jason Labrador would score his first Varsity touchdown of the season to tie the game at 27.  Two plays later the Vikings were back on top 35-27.  On the ensuing kick-off Dre Massey would record the longest touchdown in Mauldin history when he raced 99 yards to make the score 35-33.  Nate Patterson would close the 3rd quarter by giving the Mavericks their first lead of the night when he stepped in front of a pass and returned the interception 35 yards for a score and a 41-35 lead.

The Vikings muffed the kick-off to start the 4th quarter and freshman Zeb Sneed recovered the fumble.  Massey hooked up with Taz Richardson on the very next play for a 32 yard TD and a 49-35 lead.  Two possessions later Rashun Gupton would snare an interception, the fourth Vikings turnover of the day.  Jason Labrador would score his second TD of the day from a yard out to give the Mavericks a 56-35 lead.  Spartanburg would tack on a late TD, but Mauldin would recover the onside attempt and secure the 56-42 victory in Region-II AAAA play.  The win moves Mauldin to 6-4 on the season and 3-3 in the region.

Dre Massey thre for 187 and two scores, while rushing for 96 yards and two scores.  He also had the 99 yard kick-off return for a touchdown.  Jason Labrador added 91 yards and two scores on the ground.  CJ Thomas and Taz Richardson each caught a touchdown.  The Mauldin defense forced three interceptions with Nate Patterson's INT return for a TD giving the Mavs a lead they would not relinquish.

Mauldin travels to Boiling Springs next Friday to wrap up their regular season. Go Mavs!

Mavs Need Record Night to Defeat Boiling Springs

11/09/2013, 2:15pm EST
By @MavsMauldin

Mauldin's offense has been setting school records and they would need another team record to defeat Region-II AAAA foe Boiling Springs, most points in a game!  The Mavericks racked up a school record 83 points and 697 yards of total offense (also a school record) to hold off the Bulldogs 83-70.  The two teams combined for 153 points and more than 1300 yards of offense as both schools were jockeying for playoff position in the final game of the regular season.

The Bulldogs opened the game with an onside kick recovery, but the Mauldin defense held inside the red zone keeping Boiling Springs off the board.  The Mavs offense would get things going right away as they marched 85 yards, highlighted by Dre Massey's 41 yard run.  Massey found CJ Thomas for a 20 yard score and the 7-0 lead.  The defense forced a 3 and out on the second Bulldogs possession and Mauldin extended the lead to 14-0 on Massey's 13 yard scramble.  Boiling Springs cut the lead to 14-7 to end the first.

On the first play of the 2nd quarter Massey rushed 2 yards for the 21-7 lead.  The Bulldogs Daniel Thompson threw his second TD pass to cut the lead to 21-14, but the Mavs offense was unstoppable and Massey found Jason Labrador in the corner of the endzone from 12 yards out on 3rd & 10 for his second TD throw.  Two plays later Thompson threw his third TD of the game and the Mavs held a 28-21 lead.  On the ensuing drive Massey converted two 4th and shorts to keep the drive alive before finding Thomas for a 27 yard TD.  Boiling SPrings 4th TD throw would keep the back and forth going, the Mavs clinging to a 35-28 lead.  With :56 seconds left in the half, Mauldin moved the ball 45 yards and Massey hit Taz Richardson to extend the lead to 42-28 at the half.

At halftime, Massey already had 145 yards rushing and 177 throwing while accounting for four scores and his night was far from over!

Boiling Springs would open the 2nd half going 80 yards and converting a 4th & 7 for an 18 yard TD.  Leading 42-35, the Mavs were finally stopped as Massey had to punt the ball away, pinning Boiling Springs deep with a 44 yard quick kick.  The Mavs defense responded after a Tony Wideman sack forced the Bulldogs to punt, protecting the one score lead.  Massey and the offense would get back on track as he raced 22 yards for a score to extend the lead to 49-35.  Two plays later Thompson fired another TD pass.  Massey answered the two play Bulldog drive with a one play, 65 yard TD run and a 56-42 lead.  Boiling Springs again cut it to 7 until Jason Labrador raced 20 yards to keep the Mavs up two touchdowns, 56-42 after the 3rd.

In the 4th quarterbacks Thompson and Massey exchanged short TD runs on each teams opening possessions.  Massey's 4 ayrd run gave Mauldin a 70-56 lead and set Mauldin High's single game scoring record.  Thompson would answer with a 50 yard bomb, followed by a 23 yard TD throw.  Massey would score his sixth rushing TD on the next possession from 34 yards out.  The Mavs Jake Terry intercepted Thompson as the Bulldogs were driving and Massey scored from 9 yards out, his 7th rushing TD of the game and a new school record (also his 11th TD of the day with the 4 passing).  Mauldin would go up 83-63.  Boiling Springs would find the endzone one last time before running out of time.

Dre Massey ran the ball 29 times for 354 yards and the 7 rushing touchdowns.  Through the air he was 19/24 for 210 yards and 4 scores.  CJ Thomas reeled in nine of those throws for 138 yards and two scores.  Taz Richardson added eight catches for 53 yards and a score.  Jason Labrador caught one pass for a 12 yard TD and rushed the ball 18 times for 98 yards and a score.

WIth the win the Mavs improved to 7-4 and finished in a 3-way tie for 3rd in the difficult Region-II AAAA.  The win vaulted Mauldin to a 10 seed and they will travel to Sumter to open the Class AAAA State Playoffs on Friday.  Go Mavs!

Mavs Lose Heart Breaker to Indians 63-59

10/12/2013, 12:30am EDT
By @MavsMauldin

Mauldin welcomed Gaffney to Freeman Field for a Region II-AAAA showdown.  Gaffney got on the board first with a 4 yd TD run.  Dre Massey would answer with a 36 yd TD run and the Mavs took a 7-6 lead.  The Mavs tried a surprise onside on the ensuing kick-off but the Indians recovered.  However, Charles Freeman would recover a fumble two plays later setting up an 8-yd TD run by Massey.  The Mavs again would try the surprise onside and this time Freeman would recover for Mauldin. Massey would score his third TD of the 1st quarter on a 19-yd run and the Mavs would take a 21-6 lead at the end of one.

On the second play of the 2nd quarter, Gaffney would fumble the pitch and Charles Freeman would scoop it up and race 58 yards for a 28-6 Maverick lead.  The Indians would answer with a 2-yd score.  Taz Richardson would race 53 yards to set up Beau Craft for an 11-yd TD run.  Gaffney again would answer with a 5-yd score.  Both defenses would hold and Mauldin received the ball with 45.9 seconds remaining in the half.  Taz Richardson made an amazing, one handed, diving catch for 39 yards which would set up Johnathan Castle for a 20-yd field goal and the Mavs took a 38-21 halftime lead.

Gaffney came right out in the 2nd half and scored to cut the lead to ten.  Dre Massey would answer with an 11-yd score of his own.  Massey's run was set-up by a huge 4th and 13 conversion, from Massey to Parker Wyatt. Gaffney's Shaq Davidson would connect on TD's of 49 and 79 yards on the Indians next two possessions to cut the lead to 45-42.  Massey would score from 2-yds out to make the lead ten again with 7:43 left in the 4th.  The Indians would answer.  Massey then scored from 17 yds giving the Mavs a 59-49 lead.  In the final 1:39, Gaffney would score, recover an onside kick and score again to take a 63-59 lead.  Mauldin would get the ball down to their own 26 yard line, but were unable to score as the Indians held on for the narrow victory.

Dre Massey carried the ball 33 times for 272 yards and six touchdowns.  He also completed 26/41 for 279 yards.  Massey's 272 yards rushing is a school record and his six touchdowns tie a record he set last year.  Massey also set the MHS record for attempts and completions.  12 of those completions went to Taz Richardson (166 yds receiving), also a school record.  The Mavericks 587 yards of total offense also set a school record.

The Mavs fall to 4-3 and will travel to Riverside next Friday.  Go Mavs!

Mavs Homecoming to Dorman

2nd Half Struggles Doom Mavericks

10/04/2013, 11:30pm EDT
By @MavsMauldin

It was homecoming night at Mauldin High, and the Mavs showed out well in the first half building a 34-25 halftime lead.  However, after the queen was crowned, Dorman came out to spoil the ball.  The Cavaliers would put up 26 unanswered in the second half to defeat Mauldin 51-34 at Freeman Field.

The Mavs took the games opening kick, but were forced to punt and Dre Massey pinned the Cavs at their own 5 yard line.  The Mavericks defense would capitalize when Brian Murray and Quintavius Turner would combine for a sack, Turner forcing the fumble and Murray recovering in the endzone for the games opening score.  Dorman would get a FG to make it 7-3 after the 1st.

The Mavs would run a 13 play drive to end the 1st and open the 2nd quarter that ended with a Beau Craft 2-yd TD run.  Dorman answered with a one play 72 yard TD strike.  Massey would race the ensuing kick-off 45 yards and set the Mavs up with excellent field position.  Seven plays later Massey would hit CJ Thmas on a 4-yd slant and a 21-10 lead.  The back and forth would continue in the 2nd as Dorman got a 10 yard TD pass followed by Massey hitting Taz Richardson for 33 yards to set up a Massey to Parker Wyatt 8-yd TD strike.  On 3rd and 17, Dorman would get another huge 73-yd TD late in the half.  Again, with time running down, Mauldin would answer when Massey hit Wyatt for 37 yards and a 34-25 halftime lead.

Mauldin would crown their queen at the half, and afterwards the Cavaliers would take control of the game.  Dorman would score on all four of its 2nd half possessions, recover an onside kick and keep Massey and the offense off the field for much of the half, as the Mavs only got three 2nd half possessions.  Dorman would seal the 51-34 victory with an interception at the goal line to end the game.

Mauldin will regroup and host Gaffney next Friday night at Freeman Field.  Go Mavs!

Mavs Win Shoot-out at Wade Hampton

09/27/2013, 11:15pm EDT
By @MavsMauldin

Wade Hampton took the opening kick-off and drove into FG range taking an early 3-0 lead and opening up a wild first half shoot-out.  The Mavs answered when Logan Edwards burst through the line and raced 53 yards for a score. The Generals would control the clock and punch in a 5 yd TD to take a 9-7 lead to end the 1st quarter.

The Mavs would open the second quarter capping a 9 play drive with a 12 yard Dre Massey TD run and a 14-9 lead.  Wade Hampton again punched in a short TD run to regain the lead briefly.  On the ensuing drive Massey would hook up with Beau Craft twice for 49 yards, setting up a Craft 1-yd TD run.  The Generals would come back with their own 1-yd TD run and a 23-21 lead.  On the next drive the Mavs would pick up a holding and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty setting up a 1st and 36 from their own 38 yard line.  Three plays later Massey found Parker Wyatt for a 31 yard TD bomb and the Mavs secured a 28-23 halftime lead.

To open the 3rd quarter the Mavs found themselves 1st and goal from the 25 yard line when Massey hooked up with Taz Richardson for an improbable TD catch and run.  The Mauldin defense turned up the pressure in the 2nd half as well, holding the Generals scoreless.  Logan Edwards, who had 10 carries for 140 yards, would set up the next Mauldin TD after a big run.  Massey would finish the drive with a 6 yard TD run.  After a big defensive stop on 4th down, Massey would close the scoring with a 9 yard TD and a 48-23 Mavs victory!

Massey went 8 for 11 passing for 164 yards and two TD's while rushing the ball 18 times for 165 yards and three more scores.  Logan Edwards added 140 yards on the ground and a score and Beau Craft had 11 carries for 57 yards and a score.  Parker Wyatt and Taz Richardson each caught a TD strike from Massey.  The Mavs scored on 7 of 8 possessions in the game with the lone stop being a kneel down in victory formation to close the game!

The Mavs move to 4-1 on the season and will host Dorman next Friday for homecoming! Go Mavs!

Mavs Overcome Turnovers to Defeat Mann 47-20

09/20/2013, 11:15pm EDT
By @MavsMauldin

The Mauldin Mavericks were uncharacteristically turnover prone Friday night, throwing three picks and fumbling twice. However, the Mavs defense was able to force six turnovers of their own and Dre Massey accounted for 6 TD's to propel the Mavs to a 47-20 victory over the JL Mann Patriots on a night when the Mavericks honored the 1973 football team, the opening year of Mauldin High.

Massey got started early racing 62 yards on the third play from scrimmage to put the Mavs up 7-0.  The defense forced their first turnover on Mann's first play when Tony Wideman jarred the ball free and Charles Freeman recovered. The Mavs were unable to capitalize on that turnover.  On the Mavs next possession Massey hit Taz Richardson for a 49 yard score and the defense followed with another turnover when Hunter Dawsey forced a fumble.  Massey would capitalize, hitting Parker Wyatt for a 25 yard score which put the Mavs up 20-0 after missed PAT.

Mann would get on the board when Massey committed his first of three interceptions on a botched screen pass which was returned for a Patriot TD.  Massey would be picked again on the next possession to end the first quarter.

After the defense forced a punt, Massey would throw his third pick of the night and third of the season.  After another defensive stand, Massey would get back on track scoring from 24 yards out to make the score 26-7.  Logan Edwards would fumble on the next Mauldin drive, but Hunter Dawsey would return the favor by picking off the Mann first down pass.  Beau Craft would take a Massey swing pass 29 yards to extend the lead to 33-7, setting up a wild sequence.  Mann returned the ensuing kick-off for a score and Mauldin would follow with a one play 55 yard bomb from Massey to Taz Richardson, making the score 40-13 at the half.

Tyree Kinard opend the third quarter with a sack, forced fumble and fumble recovery on Mann's first possession.  Massey would run 24 yards to the 4-yard line where Beau Craft would punch in his second score of the night.  Kinard registered his second sack on the following Patriot possession and Rashad Gupton's forced fumble in the redzone caused a Mann touchback.  Gupton would get an interception on the following Patriot possession.  Mann would tack on a late score as the Mavericks took the 47-20 victory.

Mauldin will travel to Wade Hampton next Friday to face the Generals at 7:30 pm.  Go Mavs!

Mavs Defeat Hanna 51-33

09/14/2013, 12:30am EDT
By @MavsMauldin

It was a Friday the 13th kind of football night at TL Hanna.  The Mavs came away with a comfortable 51-33 win depite some odd situations down on the field.  The night might best be described by a drive late in the first half. Following a defensive stand on 4th down, the Mavs took over on the 10 yard line with just over 4 minutes left in the half.  The very first play drew an offensive pass interference, setting up 1st and 15 from the 5.  The Maverick offense marched the ball across midfield down to the Hanna 40 when things got crazy!  On 1st down from the 40 the Mavs picked up a holding call, followed by a chop block on 1st and 19 that sent the ball all the way back to the Mauldin 25.  Now with a 1st and 45, the Mavs went to work picking up yards in chunks including a 22 yard screen pass to Logan Edwards.  Mauldin marched down the field and Dre Massey ran it in from the 10 yard line.  The drive was 11 plays, 95 yards with 4 penalites and converting a 1st and 45!  It was an amazing, crazy drive orchestrated by Massey and the offense and it gave the Mavs a 28-10 lead, Hanna would tack on a late field goal to make it 28-13 at the half.

The Mavs offense got rolling early as Dre Massey hooked up with CJ Thomas for 21 yards on the opening drive to put Mauldin up 7-0.  On their 2nd possession, Massey would hit Taz Richardson for 32 yards, setting up a 2-yd TD run from Beau Craft making it 14-0.  Hanna would answer with its own short TD run making it 14-7 at the end of the 1st quarter.

The Yellow Jackets stripped Massey to open the 2nd quarter setting up a FG and a 14-10 game, but the Mavs would answer right back with a quick 6-play drive which saw Massey hit Parker Wyatt for 14 yard TD.  Mauldin's defense would hold Hanna on downs setting up the crazy 95 yard drive and a Hanna FG at the buzzer made it 28-13 Mauldin at the half.

The 2nd half opened with the defense forcing a punt and Mauldin driving 89 yards in 9 plays.  Massey would finish this drive with a 19 yard TD run, but   Hanna would answer with a 32 yard TD strike.  After Massey pinned the Yellow Jackets at the 1 yard line with a quick punt, Ricky Martin would combine to force a safety and a 37-20 lead to end the 3rd.

In the 4th quarter Massey raced 37 yards for his third rushing TD of the game and extended the Mavs lead to 44-20, but again Hanna would answer.  Then Beau Craft went to work grinding out carries and bleeding the clock.  Craft had 5 straight carries setting up a quick Massey to Richardson shovel pass for a 13 yard score.  Hanna would find the endzone one last time, but the Mavs secured the 51-33 road win.

Dre Massey completed 18 of 26 passes for 270 yards and three TD's, to go with 14 carries for 176 yards and three more TD's.  Oh, and he added 90 yards in the return game and for good measure two punts to pin the Jacets deep.  Massey was brilliant, but he got great support from his offense.  The line held Hanna at bay most of the night, which allowed Craft to rack up 78 yards rushing and a score.  Logan Edwards added 30 yards rushing and 44 receiving, mostly on screen plays.  CJ Thomas had 7 catches for 110 yards and a score.  Taz Richardson grabbed 4 balls for 72 yards and a score and Parker Wyatt caught a TD.

The Mavs will come back home to face the JL Mann Patriots next Friday night at 7:30 PM.  Go Mavs!
