Coach Lee Taylor hosted the MAVS Tennis Banquet Tuesday, 5-22-12, at Quaker Steak & Lube.  The players and families had a great time celebrating a tremendous season.  Coach Taylor stated “our team has lost to the eventual State Champion in the Play-offs for 4 of the last 5 years.  The team ended the 2012 season with an impressive record of 17-7.
Coach Taylor presented the following awards:

2012 All-Region Team – Seniors Alan Pearce-#1 Singles/#1 Doubles, Chris Haas-#5 Singles/#2 Doubles, and Junior Loic Delaby-#3 Singles/#1 Doubles were named to the 2012 All-Region team.  Alan has made the All-Region team for 5 years.  This was Chris’s first All-Region award and Loic’s second.

2012 All-State – Alan Pearce made the 2012 All-State Team last week-end at the State Singles Championships held in Lexington, SC.  Alan was also elected to the North/South All Star Team and will be competing on behalf of the MAVS this Saturday, 5-26-12.  The North/South team is elected by the SC High School Coaches Association and is comprised of the top six seniors from upper state versus the top six seniors from lower state.  The tournament is being held at the Kroc Center, Greenville, SC.  Come out and support Alan at this prestigious event this Saturday.

Most Valuable – Alan Pearce was awarded Most Valuable Player for the 2012 season.

Most Improved – Thomas Sickle was awarded Most Improved.  Thomas made the Team in 2011 as a Freshman as an alternate.  He quickly came to love the game working very hard for the past year.  His work is paying off and Thomas was in the starting line-up from the beginning of the season.  Thomas was at #2 Doubles, challenged and moved to #5 Singles.  After another challenge match, Thomas moved to the #4 Singles position towards the end of the season.  Coach Taylor stated “Thomas was an alternate last year, he has been an important part of the starting line-up this year and I expect him to be in contention for one of the top 3 slots next year.”

Maverick Award – Chris Haas was awarded the Maverick Award.  This award is picked by the Coach.  Coach stated that this award is given to someone who exemplifies the willingness to go above and beyond to support the team.  Coach gave several examples of how Chris was always the one to jump in without being asked to make sure that things ran smoothly before, during, and after the matches and practices.  This is a very prestigious award which exemplifies what it truly means to be a Maverick.

Congratulations to Coach, the 2012 Team, and the families of the players who have supported them.  Without the support of all of these individuals, MAVS tennis would not be where it is today.  Thanks in large part to the leadership of Coach Taylor, the MAVS Tennis program is thriving and has gained the respect of the Region community as a team that always competes hard, plays fair, and treats others with respect.  The Team is already training hard and looking forward to another successful season in 2013.
