Mavs 1-0 Boiling Springs

The Lady Mavs opened the regular season with an extra time win over the visiting Bulldogs.  The first half was played box to box with the Mavs finding their feet and working on their possession game.  The defense was solid, only allowing two balls to reach keeper Olivia BAKER.  The middies and strikers worked to control the ball and create chances, however Sydney SHAW’s shot from distance was the only serious threat on goal.

The Mavs began to assert themselves in the second half with excellent combinations down the wing and through the middle.  Sarah OLYARCHUK found ways around the outside and played a couple of nice balls across the goal.  Kristine ARNAU and Meaghan McGINTY worked a couple one-twos through the middle and Brianna BASSIE and Jordan MOSHER turned up the pressure in the Boiling Springs’ box.  Only a great play by the keeper kept Lauren HAWLEY’s fast break shot out of the net.  With only a few minutes left Angela POSSIDENTE beat three defenders on the right before feeding Sydney inside whose shot went just wide of the right post.  The two repeated the play just a minute later, again just missing at the post.  Despite the overwhelming pressure late in the half the match was scoreless after 60.

The Mavericks began the overtime period with the same zeal and it soon paid off.  Brooke SWETENBURG beat her defender wide left and served a ball to the near post.  Angela quickly punched the ball into the back of the net to give the girls a well-deserved lead.  The Mavs kept up the attack with Brianna finding Brooke open in the middle for a low hard shot that just missed left.  Angela’s hustle again found her clear on the right and her cross travelled the width of the box with a few Mavs trying to turn the ball home.  The final whistle sealed the first win of the season for the Mavericks, whose season looks very promising.  Well done Mavs!
