Mavs Mannhandle Patriots 2-0

The Lady Mavs travelled to J.L. Mann for their first road game and finished the night 2-0 victors.  The match began tentatively for both sides as they tried to find weaknesses to exploit.  The majority of play focused at midfield with both teams struggling to find the third or fourth pass.  The Mavs began to string their touches together and pushed the ball wide to the right before a Mav crossed a long ball to Brooke Swetenburg at the far side of the penalty area.  Brooke collected the ball and played it back across goal before she was mauled by a late tackle.  Brooke struck the spot kick well but straight down the middle where the keeper was frozen for the save.  The girls got motivated and began to enjoy the better of play.  Meaghan McGinty sent a beautiful cross from the right to the back post where two streaking Mavs just missed the needed vital touch.  Moments later Meaghan broke free from her defender and fired a 25 meter blast that took an excellent save to keep out of the net.  The Patriots began to pick up their game in the last five minutes and worked the ball deep into the Mavs’ end.  The defense blocked the first shot and the second bounced high.  Olivia Baker came strong and grabbed the ball off a Patriot’s head to end the threat before anther Patriot knocked her down.  A second attack by Mann came as a fast break through the middle.  Meghan Edwards closed down the run and forced the shot wide to keep the first half scoreless.

The second half started with the Mavs looking the aggressor.  The girls were applying more pressure and challenging every touch.  Allison Rushing collected the ball at midfield and ran strong down the left side before three defenders crowded her shot.  The Patriots only success happened when a loose ball was slipped through the defense with a striker looking for an easy tally.  Olivia came early and solid to smother the ball at the top of the box.  The Mavericks began to reassert themselves and the pressure soon paid off.  Angela Possidente stole a ball at midfield and began the attack.  She laid the ball off to Sarah Olyarchuk who played the quick wall pass back to Angela.  With a couple touches to clear herself from the defense she fired the ball low off the inside of the left post to open the scoring.  The Mavs picked up the intensity and the quality of their play.  Sydney, Brooke and Heather Madden played several good combinations down the left side.  Brooke also headed a cross from the spot to the upper right corner of goal only to have the Mann keeper make her best save.  The Mavs continued to look for their next opening and their pressure earned a corner.  Sydney Shaw’s service found an open Heather whose header sailed into the back of the net for the Mavs’ second tally.  Jordan Mosher almost got another but her fastbreak down the left side was deflected wide.  The Patriots tried to come back in the last couple minutes and their best shot sailed over the defense but bounced off the crossbar and clear.  In a last ditch effort a Patriot got an opening to goal but Meghan’s perfectly timed tackle sealed the win for the Mavericks.  A super effort by all the girls for their first road win.
