Lady Mavs Tame Wolverines 5-0

The Lady Mavs let the offense out for a run today in their impressive display against the Woodruff Wolverines.  It began when Sadie Smith connected a beautiful pass from just beyond midfield to Brianna Bassie.  Brianna was deep in Wolverine territory but was unable to get the shot off.  Moments later, Sydney Shaw got off a hard shot on goal from distance, that sailed just wide of the net....all within the first two minutes.  Brianna got off another shot a few minutes later.

The ball stayed in the Wolverine half of the field, when Allie Rushing connected with Brooke Swetenburg, in the six.  Brooke's shot was blocked by the Wolverine keeper but Jordan Mosher was there to bury the ball in the back of the net for the Mavs first score.

The Lady Mavs attack continued when Meghan McGinty sent a rocket from 20 yards out at the Wolverine keeper.  The keeper made an excellent attempt to send the ball over the crossbar, but it found it’s way into the back of the net to take the score to 2-0.  It was all Mavs from there.

Making passes at will, Brooke Swetenburg’s hard shot on a free kick was saved.  A feed from Angela Possidente to Heather Madden again to Brooke ricocheted hard off the crossbar.  Emily Smith found Brooke again for another shot on goal.  Meaghan McGinty had another go, as did Sadie Smith who attacked from the back to see her blast across the goal from distance go just outside the back post.  The half ended when Lauren Hawley fed Brooke Swetenburg, who’s deflected shot was put in the back of the net by Jackie Siatkowski making the score 3-0.

The Mavs came out passing and possessing in the second half.  Working the ball, it was approximately 10 minutes in before they resumed their offensive assault.  Emily Smith found Brianna Bassie for a shot on goal.  Sydney Shaw, returning from a cleats up hit to the knee early in the first half found Sadie Smith who set her up for a shot from distance that barely went over the Wolverine crossbar.  Sydney had another go a few moments later, as did Brianna Bassie.

Sydney Shaw’s free kick from 30+ yards was perfectly placed in the six, right on Brooke Swetenburg’s head for a beautiful goal and a 4-0 lead.  Not yet done, Meaghan Edwards took a throw in away from the Wolverines 15 yards deep in their half, and let go a sensational pass into space that Brianna Bassie took the length of the pitch for the 5th goal of the game.  The only Wolverine scoring effort was saved by Olivia Baker, protecting her "clean sheet” for the evening.

With seconds left in the game, Jackie Siatkowski started a play to Sadie Smith who deftly passed the ball back to Jackie deep inside the 18.  Jackie let fly with a beautiful touch and sent it into the upper 90 on the back post.  Although the goal was disallowed it was a fantastic play to watch.

The Mavs next outing is this Friday night against Riverside.
