Mavs Shut Out Hillcrest 2-0

The Lady Mavs welcomed the Hillcrest Rams on a crisp, cloudy evening.  As soon as the referee blew his whistle the rain began to fall.  It dampened the pitch but not the fire in the Mavs’ eyes.  The girls came out strong and immediately took control of the match.  Brooke Swetenburg took an early corner kick and Jordan Mosher flicked it on to the left post and across goal but no one could touch it home.  Moments later Jordan returned the favor and put a through ball in to Brooke but her shot was saved at the near post.  The Mavericks dominated play between the areas with the defense playing high, keeping the Rams in front of them and feeding the loose balls up to the middies.  The central midfielders worked the ball laterally with ease and provided an endless supply of through balls to the wing halfs and forwards.  The team moved the ball around at will and created several chances but could not seem to find the final touch.  Near the end of the half Sydney Shaw’s corner kick found its way across the box and to the feet of Kristine Arnau.  Kristine put her laces through the ball but it narrowly skipped past the far post.

The Mavericks started the second half in stride and quickly threatened deep in the Hillcrest half.  Barely a minute in Lauren Hawley threw long over the heads of the defense where Jordan cut the ball back at the goal line and was tripped inside the edge of the area.  Jordan kept her spot kick low but the Ram keeper made the save.  The Mavs kept up the pressure and mounted more attacks.  Lauren had a couple excellent runs down the right.  With the ball hovering at the top of the box Emily Smith found Kristine open just inside and she cracked a low shot across the goal face and wide.  The constant barrage by the Mavs paid off when a corner kick was handled in the box.  Brooke stepped up and slotted the penalty left and low into the back of the net to get Mauldin a deserved lead.  Hillcrest tried to find a spark but could only mount a single counter attack.  They played the ball long down the left trying to get behind the defense but Allison Rushing matched the wing stride for stride before winning the ball and killing off the attack.  The Mavs shrugged it off and turned up the heat.  Brooke found Angela Possidente near the touch line and Angela took the ball and two defenders deep toward goal before shooting into the side netting.  The two combined again when Brooke’s corner crossed the box where Angela cracked her volley mere inches over the bar.  Emily again turned provider when she threw behind two defenders for Meaghan McGinty to run on.  Meaghan’s volley surprised the keeper but she held on for the save.  As the clock stopped at two minutes left, it seemed the Mavericks’ dominating performance would not be further rewarded.  Sydney had other ideas and when a late clearance landed at her feet about 35 meters out, she fired a long, arcing shot that snuck under the crossbar to secure the victory and the shut out for Olivia Baker.
