Mavs Win at Woodruff 4-1

The Mavericks travelled to Woodruff to take on the Wolverines in a non-Regional matchup.  The girls were eager to show their true form and it did not take long to put the Wolverines on notice.  Lauren Young collected a ball played out by Tera Dolan and squared it to an advancing Gina Cardenas.  Gina continued the change of field to find Maggie Cowley near the touch line.  Maggie carried the ball deep before sending her low cross to the front of goal where Lauren’s header was inches wide.  The Mavs spent the next sixteen minutes dominating possession and looking for ways into the Woodruff goal, concentrating on wide play through Maggie and Tori Pilgrim.  Gina, Sarah Tuggle, Ragan Hill, Tera, and Lauren all forced good saves from the keeper or blocks by the backs.  Sarah earned a free kick just inside the center line and Gina served a great ball in behind the defense.  After a bounce, Sarah volleyed back across the keeper to open the scoring.  The Mavs continued to generate chances on goal and looked to add to their tally.  With five minutes left in the half, Ragan touched a loose ball back to Sarah who sidestepped her challenger before firing low into the left corner for her second goal.  The Mavs defense was strong all half, playing high to join in the attack, but not allowing a shot on goal.  Inside the final minute, Haley Dunham showed she was not ready to stop and hustled to save a ball at the goal line.  She chipped the ball across the face of the goal where Sarah feigned a touch to screen the keeper and Lauren finished solidly at the back post for the Mavs’ third tally.

The Mavs were not content to protect their lead and almost increased it in the opening minutes of the second half.  Tori slid a ball down the touch line to Madison Scott who served a low square cross to the corner of the six.  Sarah Kate Phillips split two defenders and fired her first touch low and left, striking the woodwork.  A few minutes later she came close again after Madison laid a nice ball back while under pressure and Sarah Kate forced a diving save from the keeper.  Madison also headed through for Brianna Knapp who had her shot to the left corner stopped by an excellent save.  Gina almost caught the keeper napping on her snap shot across goal.  Woodruff tried to stay in the match and enjoyed a ten minute spell where they were able to disrupt the Mavs’ flow through midfield.  The Wolverines brought the ball into the box once but Amanda Martin and Julianna Traurig crowded the striker off the ball.  Julianna did a great job denying attacks down the right with Gina and Tori tracking back for outlets.  Amanda and Cameron Clary held the center down leaving Tera free to press forward.  The Mavs kept at it and Haley came close as she hustled and dug a ball out near the corner of the box.  As soon as she turned she cracked a shot across goal that hit the left post.  Brianna was first to the rebound but the keeper stopped her point blank shot.  Brianna tried to turn provider when she put a great cross in front of goal but the keeper tipped it off Madison’s head.  Madison tried to tap the rebound in but her shot was cleared off the line, but only as far as Amanda B.  Her first effort was blocked, but she collected the loose ball, stepped right around the defender and fired low and sure into the right corner to net the Mavs’ fourth.  Emily showed a lot of hustle through the center and almost made it five, forcing a quality save from the keeper.  Julianna made a great overlap and crossed from deep but a good play from Woodruff kept the ball out of the net.  Brianna hustled to the rebound but her pass was intercepted on the goal line.  Another excellent shot by Emily was deflected into the side netting.  Tori almost got one when her shot was spilled by the keeper but she grabbed it as it rolled toward goal.  With about five minutes left a light rain began and it was Woodruff who used it to their advantage.  A Wolverine skipped a ball through on the greasy pitch, finding a striker alone in front of goal.  She made the most of her chance and killed the shutout.  The Mavs shook it off and finished strong with a lot of hustle, some great crosses and a few more excellent shots.  On the night, a good strong road win.
