Mavs Bruise Byrnes 4-0

The Lady Mavs got the machine revved up and beat the Byrnes Rebels on a warm spring night.  The girls came out strong with a couple of attacks down the right side and earned a quick corner.  Gina Cardenas headed Sarah Tuggle’s kick past the keeper’s reach to the right but was denied by a defender hugging the post.  Minutes later Ragan Hill fed Sarah running from the left and her shot was stopped by a the sticky fingers of the sprawling keeper.  The Mavs earned another corner after Tori Pilgrim’s cross was cleared behind the goal.  Sarah’s service was headed down by Gina and past a diving keeper for the Mav’s first tally.  The back four of Cameron Clary, Kathy Jones, Tera Dolan and Juliana Traurig used a good balance of depth and cover along with good high support to limit Caitland Considine’s touches in goal to collecting high bounces.  The Mavs almost got their second when Amanda Basabe’s low shot from the right was parried across goal where Brianna Knapp drove the ball back across the frame where a diving goalie got a hand to it.  Haley Dunham found Sarah Kate Phillips at midfield and she carried the ball deep down the left side and fired a low shot to the near post, again denied by a good save.  Sarah T almost netted when she turned quickly from a throw-in and fired a shot high to the near post.  The girls continued applying pressure on the Rebel goal with Sarah, Maggie, Haley and Sarah Kate all having shots stopped by a frantic defense.

The Mavs kept the pressure on to open the second half as the backs and middies became more fluid with moving the ball through midfield.  Tori touched a throw-in back to Juliana who played it in to Tera.  She turned and fed the ball to Ragan at midfield who one-touched it to Haley.  Haley spun with the ball, saw Sarah streaking through the defense and lifted a cross over their heads.  Sarah collected the ball and raced to goal, slipping the ball under the keeper for the second goal of the night.  Sarah struck again when Gina took a touch from Ragan and looped the ball down the left wing.  Maggie hustled down the line and sent the ball across the box where Sarah waited at the far post and tucked it in the corner.  The girls kept up the attacks while the backs collected the stray balls and fed them forward.  Tera was bowled over from behind trying to settle the ball, earning a free kick just inside our half.  She went forward as Gina set the ball.  Gina sent the ball long and behind the defense where Tera had beaten the trap.  She settled and turned with one touch and then fired the ball left past the keeper.  The girls kept the attacks coming with good shots from Amanda Basabe, Sarah Kate, Madison Scott, Tera and Brianna Knapp while Amanda Martin, Meghan Meek and Tori plied the left side of the field with ease.  All in all a nice total effort by the Lady Mavs.
