Lady Mavs Dump Dorman 2-0

The Mavericks travelled to Dorman in search of their second win on the trot.  The match began with the Mavs enjoying most of the possession.  The girls looked composed in the back, relaxed and confident on the ball; effectively moving the ball through the midfield, and using the full width in their attacks.  Several throw-ins deep into Cavalier territory kept the home side pinned and under pressure.  The hustle paid off in the eight minute after Tera Dolan knocked a keeper’s clearance down to Sarah Tuggle.  The Mavs combined through Ragan Hill, Gina Cardenas and a hustling Haley Dunham to earn a deep throw.  Haley took it quick and short to Sarah who spun past her marker and sent a low ball across the face of goal.  Gina was waiting inside the far post and coolly touched the ball in for the Mavs’ first strike.  A few minutes later the Mavericks almost had their second.  A low corner kick by Sarah was knocked back to her and she sent her second offering across goal and through a crowd.  Maggie Cowley was waiting on the far side of goal and drove her first touch low and hard to the left post.  The keeper raced across the goal, just stopping the well placed shot.  The Mavs continued to play well with the defense limiting Dorman to long lazy balls that were easily gathered by Caitland Considine.  Mauldin continued to dominate the midfield, smoothly working the ball from the back down the sides as well as from touchline to touchline.  Dorman had one counter attack through the middle via a long clearance out of the back.  Cameron Clary stayed goalside and raced stride for stride, reaching the ball first and safely clearing the ball wide.  Mauldin almost got their second when Gina’s goal kick bounced at midfield and Ragan gave chase.  The keeper came out hard and took out Ragan five meters outside the box to kill the fast break.  The Mavs finished the half strong and came close again as Tera turned a header from a late corner kick toward the upper corner of goal.  The Cavalier keeper’s fingertips pushed the ball onto the crossbar before she collected the rebound.

Dorman took the initiative from the second half kickoff earning a quick pair of corner kicks.  The first was harmlessly cleared behind but the second forced Caitland into an amazing one-handed rebound move to preserve the clean sheet.  The Mavs cleared the pressure and resumed their control of the match.  The continued pressure along the wings forced the Cavalier defense to pack in and earned a few corner kicks.  The Mavs also had success through the middle but all the shots were turned out.  The Dorman defense was destined to yield and the Mavericks turned up the pressure.  From a throw in near midfield, Gina played square to Tera who saw space in front.  She beat three defenders on the dribble before laying the ball off to Sarah on her right.  Sarah calmly slipped her shot low to the far post to give Mauldin its well-deserved second goal.  Moments later Mauldin almost had a third.  Juliana Traurig played the ball up to Tori Pilgrim who nutmegged her marker.  Hayley Dunham collected the ball and sent a low cross through the defense.  Ragan turned the ball low and hard toward goal and only a sprawling keeper denied her effort.  Dorman only managed one counter attack which the Mavs easily dealt with.  While Kathy Jones stuck to the speedy Cavalier, Gina and Juliana kept tracking back.  The three calmly turned the attack across goal before clearing the ball up field.  The Mavs quickly went on the attack when Amanda Basabe collected the ball at midfield and fed Ragan, who carried the ball to the corner and across the goal line before spotting Haley in front of goal.  A diving keeper kept Haley’s excellent shot out of the right corner.  The Mavs kept creating chances with Meghan Meek, Tera and Haley getting more shots on goal.  The Mavs dominated the rest of the match excellent hustle and smothering defense to earn the road shutout.
