HERNANDEZ  HURLS  1 HITTER  WHILE  DAVIS  &  LANDERS  LEAD  HIT
PARADE  OVER  GENERALS,  11-1

It was the unfortunate finale of a home and away series that needed
to be completed on a balmy but windy evening at Wade Hampton High School's
nice Baseball/Softball complex.  Unfortunate for the Lady Generals who had
already lost twice to the 2011 Lady Maverick Softball team by a combined
score of 30-2. After 6 innings of play Monday night, that aggregate would
become 41-3.  Coach Joseph Terry gave his Ace, Amanda Storch, the night off
and turned the ball over to Nadine Hernandez to keep the Wade Hampton team
in check and the Lady Mavs undefeated to date through the 2011 campaign.
The stately and versatile Freshman did exactly that through the
bottom of the first three innings, striking out two, and placing pitches
that resulted in 5 groundouts to her infield mates (Brianna Davis, Dana
Landers, Bria Barnhill, and Madison Tracey), a flyball out to her classmate
and leftfielder Emma Swearingen, and a line drive that was snagged by a
diving shortstop for the second out in the home portion of the third
inning.
Equally exciting was the offensive start the Lady Mavs summoned for
their opponents in grey and white.  Brianna Davis led off the first inning
with a stand-up triple to the rightcenterfield fence and was singled home
by Dana Landers with a shot into leftfield.  Landers stole second base a
pitch later and scored on an RBI single off the bat of Dee Dee Sullivan to
put the Lady Mavs up 2-0 with no outs to start the game.  Sullivan was
caught stealing second and another out later, Swearingen singled into
leftfield and stole second to get into position to score, but it wasnt to
be as a strikeout ended the Mauldin offensive first inning.
Mauldin got another run in the second inning when Junior Bria
Barnhill earned a two out base on balls, then was moved around and scored
after back to back singles from Davis and Landers. This night's dynamic duo
would be left on base in the top of the second...but they would not be two
innings later... The top of the third was forgettable save a two-out frozen
rope
over the pitcher's head and into centerfield off the bat of Senior
Co-Captain Jessica Lyles.  A fielder's choice out ended Mauldins half of
the third inning without further scoring.
The top of the fourth inning marked a change in the tempo and balance
of trade in this game...Davis and Landers hit back to back singles again,
were sacrificed forward on a nice bunt by freshman Dee Dee Sullivan, then
scored separately on an error by the Lady general's third baseman, and on
an RBI sacrifice fly to rightfield by Emma Swearingen.  Nikki Smith
reported in for Mauldin as a pinch hitter  and promptly laced a double onto
and beyond the leftfield line.  Smith was driven in on a line shot hit by
Madison Tracey into centerfield.  Tracey advanced to second as her hit was
fumbled by the Wade Hampton outfielder.  The Sophomore first baseman then
scored on a single that took off the shortstop's glove as she lunged into
the 5-6 hole to attempt a play on the cannon shot. Lyles scored on an RBI
single into right field by Bria Barnhill. Another error by the home team
and a caught flyball in center, extended then ended the Mauldin rally...but
not before the ladies in Brown and white had taken a commanding 9-0 lead.
The Lady Generals showed some fight and desire in their half of the
4th, when Miss Hendrix singled to lead things off for the Wade Hampton
squad.  A rare Mauldin error on a sacrifice bunt moved Hendrix to third and
the bunter to second.  The bases became loaded on a walk issued by
Hernandez before Catcher Kaitlyn Wagers recorded the first out on a diving
catch of a foul ball between the plate and the backstop fencing.  Then an
errant pickoff attempt allowed Hendrix to score what would prove to be the
Home team's only run.  Hernandez stiffened her resolve and her fastball,
and struck out the next batter and made a nice backhanded stop on a ball
hit back at the circle by the one following for the final out of the 4th,
but the score now Mauldin 9, Wade Hampton 1.    Deanna Sullivan led off the
top of the 5th with a basehit, but nothing more exciting followed her and
the Mavs were held scoreless in their half of the 5th.  Hernandez made
short work of the Lady Generals in the home half of the 5th inning as well.
A bouncer back to the mound and a flyball to shortstop resulted in a pair
of outs, then another strikeout finished the Wade Hampton 5th frame. Next,
two seniors and a sophomore decided to put the lady Generals out of their
misery... Jessica Lyles reached base on an error to start out the 6th
inning.  She was chased a long way back to the plate by Brianna Davis who
crushed another triple into right-centerfield.  Dana Landers then mashed a
double down the leftfield line that scored Davis and gave the Lady Mavs the
10 run cushion that would invoke the Mercy Rule if the Lady Mavs could
prevent the home team from scoring again in the bottom of the 6th.  A
flyout to Sullivan in rightfield, a groundout from Davis at third to Tracey
at first, and the 4th K on the game for Hernandez spelled the end of the
Lady General's misery on this evening.  Wade Hampton never gave up, but
they couldnt keep up either.  With a potent combination of tremendous
hitting (16 for 36) and one-hit pitching from Nadine Hernandez, the Lady
Mavs could not be denied their 10th victory of the 2011 season and 100th
victory of their Captain's Varsity Career at Mauldin.
Next up for the Undefeated Lady Mavs is a familiar locale and former
teaching and coaching stop in the upstate and upward trajectory of Mauldin
Coach Joseph Terry.  Mauldin will take on Seneca in Seneca Wednesday 3/23
at 6:00 pm
in another non-Region contest.  Come cheer on the sweet and
successful sluggers and slingers from Mauldin this Wednesday Evening - Go
Mavs !
