LADY  MAVS  ROLL  GENERALS  IN  HOME  OPENER  12-0

The Mauldin Lady Maverick Varsity Softball team, circa 2011, played
host to the Lady Generals of Wade Hampton in their first home contest of
the regular season on a brisk and breezy evening at Clayton Field on the
Mauldin High Campus.  Freshman Amanda Storch started the home opener in the
pitching circle for the Lady Mavs against Wade Hampton's finest, but didnt
spend much time there.  In three innings of work, Storch faced 9, struck
out 6, and got some solid defensive help from Senior Shortstop Dana Landers
and Sophomore 1st baseman Madison Tracey in retiring the other 3, before
freshman Nadine Hernandez came on in relief.
Offensively the Mauldin Softballers wasted no time or pitches putting
up some runs in support of the young pitching staff. Sophomore Brianna
Davis led off the bottom of the second with a double top the centerfield
fence and Landers brought her home with a hard rope into leftfield.  Deanna
Sullivan beat out an infield hit, then Katelyn Wagers crushed the optic
yellow rock into left-centerfield for a double that scored Landers and
Sullivan. Freshman Emma Swearingen pierced a single through the center of
the infield and promptly stole second base. Storch brought Wager's runner,
Sophomore Nikki Smith, in to score and moved Swearingen to third with an
infield out.  Swearingen would score a batter later on a dropped throw to
first.  Two more outs were finally recorded against the Lady Mavs in the
bottom of the first, but not before the Ladies in Orange and white had
batted around and put 5 runs on the scoreboard.
The bottom of the second was almost as productive. Davis reached on
an error then Landers rocketed a single into left. A fielders choice out
later, Wagers got her second hit and RBI of the game with a single into
leftfield that scored a hustling landers from second. Smith came on to run
again for the blonde catcher.  Swearingen reached on another fielders
choice that retired Sullivan and Storch singled into right-center to score
Smith for the second time in the game.  Senior Krystina Simms came on to
run for the pitcher and scored along with Swearingen when Madison Tracey
lifted a blast over the Generals rightfielder's head for a 2 RBI double.
As the third out was made and the Lady Mavs took to the field to start the
third inning, they sported a 9 run lead on 9 hits to their opponents
nothing in both categories.  This is when coaches Joseph Terry and Brian
Thompson put the brakes on their classy young team.
In the bottom of the third, Junior Bria Barnhill led off with a
basehit to right-center and Landers followed an out later with an RBI
single through the 5-6 hole.  Sullivan crunched an outside pitch to the
rightfield fence but was held at first for a single.  An out Later, Landers
scored on an infield out.  Storch walked and was replaced by Simms as a
runner who witnessed the third out a couple of pitches later from 1st base.
When the Lady Mavs took the field for the top of the 4th, it was Nadine
Hernandez throwing the warmup pitches from the mound.  With her job well
done in 3 perfect innings, Storch could enjoy an earned rest and it would
be up to her classmate and Mauldin Recreation League All-Star teammate of a
half dozen years to put the finishing touches on this game.       Hernandez
did exactly that in two innings of work against the Lady Generals. The
versatile Freshman player faced 8 batters, striking out two, walking two,
and throwing out two herself on ground balls hit back to the mound.  Davis
and Tracy each paired with Barnhill to record the other two outs as the
Storch and Hernandez tandem combined for a no-hit shutout of Wade Hampton
on a cool night in Mauldin.  The Lady Mavs would post one more run in the
bottom of the 4th when Senior Jessica Lyles earned a base on balls, was
moved to second on a shot into left-centerfield off the bat of Bria
Barnhill that also could have been an RBI double in a different situation.
With one out, following a walk to Landers to load the bases,  Lyles scored
Mauldin's 12th and final run on an RBI fielders choice off Sullivan's bat
that forced Landers at second. After the third out was made and the Lady
Generals tried unsuccessfully against Hernandez to score in the 5th, the
Mercy rule was invoked by the umpires and the Lady Mavs moved their record
to 6-0 by winning their home opener in convincing fashion.
