Young Mavericks stay unbeaten

Posted in 2011 Softball, Team by JoyeDavis

Following the graduation of eight seniors off last year's Class AAAA state softball championship team, Mauldin High was faced with the task of rebuilding, and doing so in the not-so-arguably toughest region in the state.

So far, the rebuilding project hasn't had any bumps in the road. The Mavericks improved to 15-0 and 5-0 in Region 2-AAAA with an 8-5 win over Hillcrest on March 29.

LANDERS AIMING FOR MORE CELEBRATIONS

Posted in 2011 Softball, Team by JoyeDavis

Winning softball games has become a way of life for Mauldin senior Dana Landers. Her biggest win came in 2010 when the Mavericks won the Class AAAA state championship.

“It was such a big deal,” Landers said. “It was a great feeling knowing that team had put in so much hard work and finally it paid off.”

DAVIS POWERS MAVS PAST HILLCREST, 8 - 5

Posted in 2011 Softball, Team by JoyeDavis

A capacity crowd gathered at Mauldin's Clayton Field Tuesday evening
under overcast skies and amidst a gentle but cool and wet breeze.  Those
arriving early got the best seats and watched a gallantly played see-saw
battle between the J.V. softball teams of Mauldin and Hillcrest high, won
in the top of the fifth by Hillcrest who staged a 5 run rally then held off
the Mauldin girls in the bottom of the 5th, to a final score of 12-8.
Afterwards the varsity teams began their warmups and the tension built as
arch-Rivals Mauldin and Hillcrest prepared to do battle on the softball
field.  In this rivalry it often doesnt matter who has the best record, or
who is expected to win, often not even who is the home team... it comes
down to which team brought "it" and which is best mentally prepared for
this emotional contest.  In 2010, Hillcrest visited Clayton Field, sitting
in 4th place in the region and facing Mauldin's Region 2 first place and
undefeated team on Senior Night...and upset the eventual 4A State
Champions.  On paper Hillcrest had the more experienced team, but Mauldin
had the better record and ranking...Who would show up and who would falter
under the lights and with a standing room only bipolar & raucous crowd in
attendance ?

Coach Terry's 100th win!

Posted in 2011 Softball, Team by JoyeDavis

Congratulations to Mauldin's head softball coach, Joseph Terry !
The hard working coach and educator has amassed the hundred win versus 25
loss record in only 4 1/2 seasons, including a 65-8 record at Mauldin
(which includes two region titles and a State Championship).  Before coming
to Mauldin, Terry was a winning head coach at Seneca with a 35-17 record in
2 seasons.  The team and assistant coaches Brian Thompson and Michelle
Fowler
celebrated after the game with a huge Softball shaped and decorated
Chocolate Chip cookie and pictures to mark the event.

MAVS BULLY TIGERS & WOLVERINES

On a gorgeous Friday afternoon the Mauldin Varsity Softball team
travelled South to Starr-Iva for the start of the Crescent Lady Tiger
Invitational Softball tournament.  Their first opponent in Pool play would
be the host team - the perennial 2A state title contenders and winners of a
score of Championships since the late 1970s as attested to by the
impressive row of signs lining the outfield fence of Crescent's varsity
field.  On the line was a leg up for a berth and seeding in the semifinals,
which would commence Saturday evening. There were however two more
poignant reasons for the Lady Mavs to play well in this game - first, to atone
for a substandard hitting and poor baserunning performance against Crescent
in a pre-season contest in Mauldin, won by the Lady Mavs 2-0.  The second
motivation was for their beloved coach Joseph Terry.  After Thursday
night
's win over Riverside, Coach Terry's win total as a High School head
softball coach stood at 99.  The lady Mavs had the opportunity to help and
celebrate their coach's 100th win if they could take care of the business
on the field.

MAVS POWER PAST RIVERSIDE

As the fans weaved their way through the fenced and gated access maze
to the Riverside sports complex and the sun began to set, anticipation
began to rise while the temperature fell.  The Mauldin Lady Maverick
softball team was past the midway point in an intense, but so far
successful, weeklong "road trip" of away games.  After two blowout wins
against non-region competitors, the Mauldin softballers faced a region foe
in the Lady Warriors of Riverside.

SWEARINGEN, & SULLIVAN  MASH,  HERNANDEZ SAVES,  MAVS  WIN  12-2

After a long busride to the shores of Lake Keowee in Oconee County,
The undefeated Mauldin Varsity Softball team warmed up in preparation for a
non-region contest against the 3A Lady Bobcats of Seneca High School under
cloudy skies.  Maybe "warmed up" is understated...  The Lady Mavs came out
with their bats afire in the top of the first !  Bria Barnhill led off with
a single into leftfield, Brianna Davis Doubled into rightcenter to score
Barnhill, Dana Landers singled home Davis, and Kaitlyn Wagers singled in
Landers.  With 3 runs across and only one out, Amanda Storch reached on a
Lady Cat error and Emma Swearingen followed with a single up the middle to
move Nikki Smith (running for the pitcher, Storch) to third.  Madison "Big
Hit" Tracey then crunched a double to the fence in left-centerfield that
plated both Smith and Swearingen.  An out later, Barnhill singled for the
second time in the first inning ...this time adding an RBI as Tracey scored
the 7th run of Mauldin's first inning.

It was the unfortunate finale of a home and away series that needed to be completed on a balmy but windy evening at Wade Hampton High School's nice Baseball/Softball complex.  Unfortunate for the Lady Generals who had already lost twice to the 2011 Lady Maverick Softball team by a combined score of 30-2. After 6 innings of play Monday night, that aggregate would become 41-3.  Coach Joseph Terry gave his Ace, Amanda Storch, the night off and turned the ball over to Nadine Hernandez to keep the Wade Hampton team in check and the Lady Mavs undefeated to date through the 2011 campaign.

BARNHILL, LANDERS & WAGERS POWER OVER BYRNES

The Mauldin High Varsity Softball team hosted the Byrnes Lady Rebels at Clayton Field Friday evening in another 4A Region 2 Showdown between 2 reams ranked in the State's 4A Top 10.  The Lady Mavs impressive Freshman, Amanda Storch, toed the rubber for the home team and faced her opposite pitcher - Byrnes top player and 2010 All Region selection, Cheyenne Griffin, to start the game. Storch handcuffed griffin and got a groundout to Short where Dana Landers fielded cleanly and threw accurately to Madison
Tracey at first for the lead out. Next up was Byrnes senior Slapper , Samantha Vaughn.

On a cool and overcast evening at Mauldin's Clayton Field, Coach Joseph Terry and the Lady Mavs played host to the Lady Bulldogs of Boiling
Springs in a Clash of Titans. It would be an early season showdown between Upstate rivals from 2010, Region 2 competitors, and the 3rd and 4th State
ranked 4A softball teams in 2011 !  The crowd was restless in anticipation, the players anxious and excited to get the game underway.

LADY MAVS ROLL GENERALS IN HOME OPENER 12-0

Posted in 2011 Softball, Team by SandyLawson

The Mauldin Lady Maverick Varsity Softball team, circa 2011, played host to the Lady Generals of Wade Hampton in their first home contest of
the regular season on a brisk and breezy evening at Clayton Field on the Mauldin High Campus.  Freshman Amanda Storch started the home opener in the
pitching circle for the Lady Mavs against Wade Hampton's finest, but didnt spend much time there.  In three innings of work, Storch faced 9, struck
out 6, and got some solid defensive help from Senior Shortstop Dana Landers and Sophomore 1st baseman Madison Tracey in retiring the other 3, before
freshman Nadine Hernandez came on in relief.

LADY MAVS SQUEAK OUT VICTORY

The game wasnt as pretty as Clayton Field nor the afternoon that led up to the Mauldin Varsity Softball Team's final pre-season contest before
the kickoff of the regular season campaign next week.  Coming off of a thrilling and victorious Snowball Classic Tournament performance three days
ago, the Lady Mavs squared off against perennial 2A State championship contender, the Crescent Tigers from Starr - Iva in Anderson County.

with 19 other South Carolina Piedmont and Upstate High school softball  teams to play in the Snowball Classic Early Season Softball tournament,
hosted by Southside Christian School.  4 teams in each of 5 pools would play each other to determine seeding for Bracket play on Saturday

FRESHMAN SHINE IN 14-0 WIN OVER WREN

Posted in 2011 Softball, Team by SandyLawson

The 2011 Mauldin Varsity Softball team travelled to Wren for their 4th pre-season contest against the 2008 4A state champion Golden
Hurricanes.  It began on a beautiful afternoon that became a brisk evening when the sun set on the pair of young teams on the diamond with legacies
and traditions to uphold for their schools.  Mauldin drew first blood in the top of the first, getting a walk and a steal from Brianna Davis,
followed by an RBI single from Katelyn Wagers. Freshmen Dee Dee Sullivan and Emma Swearingen then hit back to back RBI doubles to post 3 runs for
Mauldin before the third out was recorded in the first frame.

LADY MAVS CONTINUE TO ROLL

Posted in 2011 Softball, Team by SandyLawson

On a glorious Spring (?) day in mid-February, the Mauldin Maverick 2011 Varsity Softball team took a 45 minute busride North to Travelers Rest
to compete in a pre-season tri-team scrimmage against the Lady Bears of Belton-Honea Path and the host Lady Devildogs of Travelers Rest High
School. The first 5 inning game of the tri-team scrimmage for the visiting Lady Mavs was against the hosts in White, Royal and Gold and their stout
rigthanded pitcher #16.  She would represent a good test for the young defenders of the 2010 4A state championship as the first pitcher the Lady
Mavs have seen pushing the 55 mph speed limit in the 2011 campaign.

LADY MAVS TROUNCE BLUE RIDGE

Posted in 2011 Softball, Team by SandyLawson

The 2011 Defending 4A State Champion Lady Maverick Varsity Softball team opened their 2011 campaign with a scrimmage on a Beautiful
mid-February Saturday afternoon on Mauldin's Clayton field against a young 3A Blue Ridge High School team.  Freshman Amanda Storch toed the rubber for
the Lady Mavs, establishing her dominance over the young players in Black and red early and often.  In 4 innings of shutout work, Storch struck out
10, gave up no hits and only one base on balls.
