Tournament of Horns Review

2/25/2011 – Clinton 9 Mauldin 8

The 2011 season got off to a slow start in game 1 of the Tournament of the Horns.   Clinton’s red hot bats set the tone for the night as they jumped out to an early 6-1 lead.  The Mavericks battled back behind Sophomore Cory Thompson’s 3 run-home run, as well as 2-3 performances from Sophomore Ramon Osuna and Junior Alex Hebert, respectively.


2/26/2011 – Woodmont 5 Mauldin 4

For the second consecutive night, the Mavs departed McClain field on the wrong end of the scoreboard.   Senior Steve Byerley got the nod on the mound for game two and did not disappoint.  Byerley went 4 1/3 strong innings, giving up 1 hit, 1 run, striking out 8 and walking 3, leaving with the score 4-1 in his favor.   Woodmont mounted a comeback with a 3 run homerun tying the score at 4, and using a squeeze bunt in the 6th to take a 5-4 lead.  The Mavs stranded a runner on second to end the game.  Sophomore Cory Thompson, Senior Rannz Bodison, Sophomore Ramon Osuna, Senior Jeremiah McKie, Sophomore Spencer Peay, and Junior Curt Harper all tallied hits for the Mavs.


3/1/2011 – Mauldin 12  Laurens 2

On a chilly March evening, the Mavericks earned their first win of the 2011 season.  Sophomore Cory Thompson pitched 6 2/3 masterful innings striking out 9 Raiders, yielding 5 hits, walking 2 and giving up just 2 runs.  Senior Brandon Dyer paced the Mav offensive attack with 3 hits, while 8th grader LT Tolbert added 2 hits and 2 RBI.


3/2/2011 – Mauldin 8  Rock Hill 3

Taking the mound for his 2nd start of the tournament, Junior RHP Layton Meacham returned to form throwing a dominating 6 innings.  The big right hander gave up 2 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 7 and walking 5.  Freshman Daniel Johnson pitched the 7th striking out 2 Rock Hill batters.  Sophomore Cory Thompson, Senior Jeremiah McKie and Junior Alex Hebert all tallied 2 hits, while Senior Ranz Bodison hit a line drive homerun for the Mavericks.
