3/5 MAULDIN 0-1 Spring Valley HS Viking Cup

Mauldin squared off against the Spring Valley Vikings early Saturday morning.  Both teams tried to dominate the midfield and probed the defenses with wide attacks.  The Mavs had some early success earning several corners and Emily Praktish just missing an awesome cross from Maggie Cowley.  Maddy Thompson was a first half standout as she was forced to save four point blank shots.  The half looked to end scoreless until the last minute when a low ball found its way across the box for a Viking tap in.

The Mavs came out strong in the second half effectively stopping the Vikings at midfield and keeping the Spring Valley back four and keeper were under constant pressure.  The Mauldin middies anticipated well shutting down the passing lanes while pushing the ball forward and feeding the forwards.  Mauldin's attacks probed the Spring Valley defense but could not put the ball in the back of the net.  Caitland Considine was relatively unchallenged in net but made two good saves at the top left of her goal.  A couple of lengthy injury delays and tired legs eventually took their toll and killed off the Mavs chances.  The girls should take pride in their never-give-up effort.
