3/4 MAULDIN 2-0 Airport HS Viking Cup

The Lady Mavs opened their 2011 Viking cup with a convincing win over the Airport High Eagles.  The Mavs dominated play with 90 percent of the possesion and only allowed the ball past midfield a half dozen times.  Airport only had two shots in anger, one a breakaway that Maddy Thompson aggressively shut down at the top of the box.  The Mavs continuous pressure resulted in numerous corners and several shots, however none found their way past a shaky defense and keeper.

Mauldin started strong in the second half with several early opportunities.  The Eagles' offense was reduced to a few long balls which were easy work for the back four.  The Mavs continued their control of the midfield and persistent high pressure.  Brianna Knapp poked a ball in from the right of goal to open the scoring.  Several Mavs can claim an assist as the white jerseys outnumbered the blues in the box.  The girls did not relax and kept Airport under pressure, which paid off when Emily Praktish struck the back of the net from an Amanda Basabe corner to seal the win.  A third scoring opportunity was denied when Maggie Cowley was brought down from behind in the box.  The ref elected to blow full time instead of the spot kick.  The girls' hard work was rewarded with a pasta dinner courtesy of Coach Taylor's gracious parents.  An excellent effort by all the girls tonight!
