Mavs Win Upstate 3 : 2 in Overtime

Posted in Varsity Girls Soccer by DaveyPhillips

It was everything it was supposed to be.  The two best teams in the Upstate squaring off with everything on the line.  Their own private rubber match that would provide the winner with a trip to Memorial Stadium, and the loser with thoughts of what might have been.  The coaches had done all they could, the fans eager to do their part – it was all up to the players.

(4/29) Mauldin 3-1 Riverside

Posted in Varsity Girls Soccer by DaveyPhillips

The Mavericks showed tonight what they are made of.  The girls displayed their skill, determination, conditioning and character in their convincing overtime win at Riverside.  The first half was a tug of war with both sides looking for a way through the back fours.  Mauldin chose to win balls in the air and push forward on the ground while Riverside mostly played balls over the heads of the Mavs.  The first serious threat on goal came from the spot as Riverside converted a penalty kick in the 28th minute.  The aggressive play continued with the Warriors picking up the first of their three yellow cards on the evening.  The Mav defense tightened up their marking and limited Riverside to long range efforts and lazy corner kicks.  Caitland Considine was steady in goal with sure hands and good decisions.  The midfield picked up their pressure on the ball and effectively shut down the Riverside attack.

3/26 LADY MAVS (1) @ T.L. Hanna (0)

Posted in Varsity Girls Soccer by EllenCasper

The Lady Mavs travelled to T.L. Hanna for a Saturday morning game in the rain and came up with another win for the season.  The girls dominated the first half with good passing skills in the back and middle but came up short on goals.  Ali Simpson's shot on goal about 30 minutes into the half flew over the crossbar.  The girls kept pressure on the opponent's defense for a majority of the half. Rain continued falling as the second half started and the Lady Mavs struggled to get control of the game as the had in the first half. The girls forced a couple of corner kicks. Sarah Tuggle served each one in from the corner and Gina Cardenas headed them but failed to get the ball in the net.  One shot was just left of the post. Sarah served up a third corner kick and Lauren Young put her head on the ball but the ball hit the left post.  With approximately 22 minutes left in the game lightning struck over head and the players headed for shelter for a rain delay. Once play resumed the team had several opportunities to score off corner kicks but failed to get the ball in the net.  The score after regulation was 0-0, a testament to a strong Lady Mavs defense, including some great nabs by goalie, Caitland Considine.  Two 5-minute over time periods produced no change in the score and the game went to PK kicks.  Gracie Boswell, Lauren Young, Sarah Tuggle, and Emily Praktish all placed their PKs in the net.  Ms. Considine, goalie, grabbed the opponents fifth attempt at a PK and the Lady Mavs WON AGAIN.

Lady Mavs lose to Riverside in PK's 0-1

Posted in Varsity Girls Soccer by EllenCasper

The LADYMAVS played Riverside at home on Wednesday evening, the first match against Riverside as a Region 2-AAAA team.  It was a windy evening.  Both teams came out to play and play fast, physical, and with determination.  The LADYMAVS technical skill and passing game outdoing their opponent who played a more physically aggressive game.  Twenty minutes into the first half Gracie Boswell's shot to goal hit the cross bar and bounced straight down.  Several minutes later, Caitland Considine, goalie, turned away a potential score by Riverside with a diving save.  The LadyMavs continued play in the second half with good possession and serves to the goal by the defenders and mid-fielders.  The team struggled to get a goal in this evenly matched physical game.  The opponent handed the team several opportunities to gain an edge due to a dozen or so fouls.  The intensity of the game explemplified by the issuance of a few yellow cards.  The game was scoreless after regulation time and after two 5-minute overtime periods. Defensive players kept the opponent scoreless again. The game went to PKs with Riverside winning by one.  The LADYMAVS played well and the match up brought out the best in the girls.
