Lady Mavs Win over Hillcrest!

Posted in Headlines by SandyLawson

The scene was set... “Old McDonald Had a Farm..” played on the loud speakers. The lights were bright and the gym floor was freshly refinished and had that new gym floor shine and smell. It was Friday night, December 7, 2012 in Simpsonville, SC at the home court of the Lady Rams of Hillcrest High school. Just a few days earlier, the Lady Rams had defeated the Lady Mavs of Mauldin High school in a game that they probably should not have won. Tonight was fresh. And this time the referees did their job. Read on for the details!

The Lady Mavs controlled the first quarter with nearly all of the players getting some points on the board.  Caitland Considine #11 had 3 assists early on with some nice team passing. The Lady Mavs were stealing the ball too, while the Lady Rams turned the ball over to the Mauldin several times as well. #25 Kentra Washington was brilliant with 2 amazing rebounds and a quick outlet that lead to some nice possession time for Mauldin. She was fouled but made both of her foul shots. #24 Dah’Vielle Lucas scored 2 and had a pair of rebounds too. Also strong on the boards was #33 Abigail Hurwitz with 2 rebounds, a steal, and two points. #13 “the Exciting” Julyssa Brown added a rebound, a ton of great defense and two points too. Starting her trend for the game#12 Kilian Meilinger shot her first beautiful 3-pointer of the game. All this in only the first quarter! The Lady Mavs were ahead finishing the quarter with 5 Hillcrest to 15 Mauldin.

Slowing a bit, the Lady Mavs built on their lead in the 2nd quarter with some great plays but missed foul shots. #11 Caitland Considine made a great play blocking a shot. #12 Kilian Meilinger, #13 Julyssa Brown, and #24 Dah’Vielle Lucas all stole the ball during the quarter. The Lady Mavs were not very strong at the line missing a lot of opportunities to build on their lead from the foul line making only 4 of 11 free throws. #25 Kentra Washington sank both of her shots in those numbers. The second quarter ended 13 to 25 Mauldin.

Third quarter Hillcrest picked up some momentum. Our Lady Mavs played a bit sloppy, fouled a little, did not move the ball like they had been and can do. #15 Walisha Brown put in a foul shot. They only recorded rebound noted for the entire 8 minutes was by #33 Abigail Hurwitz.  Fortunately, there were 8 minutes more to play and the quarter ended with a score 24 to 32 Mauldin still in the lead.

Take a deep breath, will you! Our Lady Mavs finished this game with some amazing shooting. Our #12 Kilian Meilinger scored 14 points on 5 shots, four 3-pointers!  She did not miss. Adding to the total along the way, #11 Caitland Considine sank 2 foul shots, #25 Kentra Washington had a rebound and a shot from the field. #33 added a few rebounds to keep the ball in the hands of the shooters. The game ended 44 to 50 Mauldin and the sounds of “E-I-E-I-O” could be heard all the way to Main Street in downtown Simpsonville, as the Mauldin bus drove our champions home.

Lady Mavs Basketball vs JL Mann

Posted in Headlines by SandyLawson

Early on it looked like it would be a struggle as our Lady Mavs struggled to get a decent shot off. While J.L. Mann had a few fouls, they played a very tight and active defense. The first quarter closed with a score of Mauldin 8 against J.L. Mann 16. J.L. Mann’s #11 Angel McGowen scored 7 quick points in that quarter and was a huge play-maker for their team. If she wasn’t taking the shot, she was drawing a defender to open up her team for an easy pass.

The Lady Mavericks did not give up. With a lot of great hustle and some amazing spurts of outstanding play, the Lady Mavericks broke even with their opponents with a total of 8 points each ending the quarter at 16 – 24 J.L. Mann. #13 Julyssa Brown got the first complete set of free throws of the season and did it just after stealing the ball and getting fouled.

After the half, the 3rd quarter started out with several minutes of outstanding play by the Lady Mavericks. #23 Dah’Vielle Lucas had a great spurt of play with 3 baskets and a steal in about 2 minutes of play. They were passing well, making their layups and hustling the full length of the court. However, they began to missed rebounds and not take advantage of their possessions of the ball. They outscored J.L. Mann and finished the 3rd quarter just 5 points behind with a score of 28 to 34 J.L. Mann.

The story this time is the same as the last 3 articles written on this site. At just 2:41 left in the game, the Lady Mavs had the win in their sights, and a tie showing on the scoreboard. The Lady Mavericks have the talent to finish the game with a win. Something is stopping them from achieving this. Unfortunately, the fouls and missed rebounds again in the 4th quarter left plenty of room for J.L. Mann to take by the win. The final score was 37 to 42.  J.L. Mann’s #11 McGowen scored 8 out of 10 from the foul line in the 4th quarter, and the only points their team scored the entire 4th quarter.  Mauldin shot 9/15 from the foul line, while Mann shot 12/15. Kentra Washington #25 finished with 13 points.

While it again tough to take this loss, our Lady Mavericks are planning on bringing their A game to Simpsonville to take on their rivals, Hillcrest this Friday. Come join us for a loud and exciting game.

Lady Mavs 1st Game with Hillcrest

Posted in Headlines by SandyLawson

The Lady Mavericks greeted their biggest rivals in the second game of the season on Friday November 30, 2012 at 6pm in the Mauldin gym. The Lady Mavericks has a hesitant start with a first quarter plagued with turnovers by both teams. There was early foul trouble for #25 Kentra Washington getting 2 fouls and coming out of the game with 3 minutes left in the 1st quarter. A highlight for the first quarter was #13 who has a basket, a steal and a blocked shot all in under 60 seconds ticking off the clock. It was some real exciting and brilliant play. The quarter ended at 9 – 10 in Hillcrest’s favor.
