MAULDIN -- Joe Jackson, a senior at Mauldin High, said his father usually wears the ring.

But on Wednesday, the day Jackson signed a baseball scholarship with The Citadel, he wore the 1917 World Series ring that belonged to his great-great-great uncle -- “Shoeless” Joe Jackson.

“This is the third time I’ve worn it,” Joe Jackson said of the ring the former baseball great passed on to young Joe’s father’s side of the family.

Jackson said he takes pride in being related to “Shoeless” Joe, and he looks forward to continuing his own career at The Citadel.

“Everybody says he’s a throwback baseball player,” said Mauldin coach Jim Maciejewski, adding that Jackson is “a great all-around kid” equally devoted to academics and athletics.

Jackson, an All-Region 2-AAAA selection entering his third season as the Mavericks’ starting catcher, visited Wofford College and drew interest from Gardner-Webb, Coastal Carolina and the Naval Academy.

But he was surprised when he visited The Citadel.

“I’d heard some things, but it’s nothing like what people think it is,” Jackson said. “A lot of people make it military-based, but it’s just college-based for baseball players.”

Jackson said playing Division I baseball is “a dream come true,” and he’d like to follow his famous relative into the big leagues.

“But you’ve got to take those baby steps first,” he said. “I’m going to play college baseball. That’s all that matters right now.”
