2004 - 2005 SEASON RECAP

The Mavericks had a successful initial season of competition in Region 2-AAAA. The team's second place region finish earned them a home meet in the first round of the state duals tournament. The final region standings were:

1. Byrnes 5-0
2. Mauldin 4-1
3. Hillcrest 3-2
4. Dorman 2-3
5. Spartanburg 1-4
6. Boiling Springs 0-5

Team highlights of the regular season included wining a second straight Maverick Invitational, finishing 2nd at the Outback North Myrtle Beach Classic, and logging 4th place finishes at both the Blue Devil Invitational and the bruising Knightmare Duals in Lawrenceville, Georgia.

The team's dual record for the year was 16-10 , which belies the results achieved in the face of a very competitive schedule and a number of late season illnesses and injuries. The Mavs significantly upgraded the difficulty of their schedule for the 2004-2005 season. The corresponding top-level experience gained will pay handsome dividends next year when the Mavericks should return 12 of 14 starters (including a state champion, 2 state placers and a state qualifier) who accumulated over 300 wins during the 2004-2005 season.

The following Mavericks won weight class tournament titles during the year: Logan Smith (Maverick Invitational, Region 2 Tourney, Upper State Championships), Elliott Courter (North Myrtle Beach), Jeff Smith (North Myrtle Beach, Greenville County & Upper State Championships), Chris Burford (Maverick Invitational) and Clint Culbreath (Maverick Invitational). Jeff Smith also won the Most Outstanding Wrestler award at the Greenville County Championships.

While the varsity was enjoying a successful season, the Maverick JVs demonstrated that there is plenty of young talent available to keep the varsity pipeline well stocked. Among others, Ryan Cohen, Jeff Foster, Jeff & Jon Hatmaker, Travis Heidelberger, Brett Johnson, Kameron Minyard, Micah Price, Zane Sneed, Josh Sorrells and Lucas Watson all showed significant promise for the future. Ryan Cohen and Lucas Watson captured individual weight class titles at the Greenville County JV Championships. The experience that the JVs gained this year at competitions, as well as their day-to-day work with the Maverick starters, will allow them to offer intensified competition for next year's starting slots. It will also give the team greater protection against illnesses and injuries.

In the state duals tournament, the Mavericks won their first round contest against Orangeburg-Wilkinson by a score of 57-23. The Mavs lost in the second round of the tourney to eventual runner-up Rock Hill by a score of 53-24. As had been the case during the majority of the final month of the season, the team wrestled against Rock Hill with several regular starters missing due to injury or illness. Logan Smith, Elliott Courter and Jeff Smith all put in superior performances at the upper state championships and advanced to the finals of the 2005 State Individual Championships. Logan and Jeff are now reigning upper state champions, going undefeated at the upstates in their weight classes. Elliott qualified for the state finals for a second time, having won the 2003 state championship as a freshman in the 103 lb. weight class. Click here for the complete upper state tournament results. Brad Bagwell, Clint Culbreath and Carl Hiller all came within one victory of qualifying for the state finals. Brad had a 27-14 record for the year, Clint finished at 37-12 and Carl ended the season at 30-18.

Congratulations to Jeff & Logan for their outstanding performances at the 2005 state finals! Jeff earned a silver medal with his second place finish in the 135 pound weight class. He had the highest winning percentage on the team for the year, ending the season with a 39-4 record. Logan won a bronze medal with his third place finish in the 103 pound weight class. He recorded the highest number of wins for the Mavs during the year, finishing with a record of 43-9. In the team scoring for the event, the Mavericks logged a solid 10th place finish in the AAAA Division. Click here for the tournament individual results. Jeff and Logan became the 46th and 47th state championship placers in Mauldin school history. Elliott came up one win shy of advancing to the medal round, ending the year with a 39-17 record.
