MAVS GIVE DORMAN A GOOD FIGHT - LOSE IN 5: 25-23,21-25,25-22,21-25,11-15
With a playoff berth assured, the Lady Mavs took to the hardwood again on Tuesday night looking to improve their seeding heading into the state tournament. But it would be no easy task with defending state champion Dorman visiting MHS Gym.
The match started off very much a back and forth affair with neither team able to take control until the Mavs were able to put a nice run together late in the game, and just like the first matchup earlier in the year at Dorman, the Mavs took game 1, 25-23.
In game 2, the Cavaliers stormed out to a quick 8-4 lead and eventually pulled ahead by 5 midway through the game forcing a Mavs timeout. The Mavs were able to regroup and close the game to 1 but the Cavs were able to pull out the victory 25-21.
However, in Game 3 the Lady Mavs regained their footing and with some solid hitting from their outsides Heather Granger (18 kills for the match) and Katie Faith (also 18 kills), good sets by Kayla Whitten (46 assists), and strong defense from Libero Dana Landers (41 digs), defensive specialist Emily Cooper (22 digs) and Granger and Faith (23 digs each), the Mavs took game 3, 25-22.
The defending state champs were able to hold off the Mavs in game 4, 25-21 and send the match to a deciding fifth set. In set 5, the Mavs looked shaky early falling behind quickly 5-0. After a timeout, the Mavs were able to storm back and tie the game at 9. But some smart hitting to the corners by the Cavaliers allowed the visitors to take game 5, 15-11.
It was a fantastic volleyball match on both sides. The Mavs have the rest of the week off before taking on Riverside at MHS next Tuesday night - SENIOR NIGHT! Please come out as we honor our 4 seniors and send them off with a victory! Go Mavs!

MAVS SMOKE MANN IN 3: 25-5, 25-17, 25-12 - Clinch Playoff Spot!
The Lady Mavs played JL Mann on Thursday evening in the MHS gymnasium and in doing so showed support for Breast Cancer Awareness by decorating the gym with pink balloons and themselves with pink face paint, hair ribbons and band aids. But on this night it was the Patriots that would need the band aids.
The Mavs regular starters played game 1 and it was a dominating performance from the start. The Mavs cruised to quick 7-0 lead that included a Heather Granger kill off the chest of a Mann defender. The Mavs didn't let up throughout and cruised to a 25-5 victory.
In game 2, the Mavs deployed a new line up and received outstanding play from Sammy Hauser, Jenna Ramsey, Carolyn Sullivan and Hayley Davis in their extended action and the Mavs cruised again 25-17.
In game 3, the Mavs again changed the line up around with Chelsey Scott playing outside and Katie Faith switching over to right side and Kayla Whitten successfully killing the ball from her setter position and the Mavs made this a quick night with a 25-12 victory and sealing the entire match in about 1 hour.
As the Mavs were winning in easy fashion, across town a longer and tougher match was taking place with Byrnes at Riverside that was won by Riverside 3 games to 2. By virtue of these two results, the Mavs have clinced a spot in the AAAA playoffs for 2010! With three games to go, the Mavs will look to improve upon their seeding beginning with a home game against Dorman on Tuesday night. Go Mavs!

MAVS BEAT BYRNES IN 4: 23-25;26-24;25-18;25-20
The Lady Mavs played a crucial match Tuesday night with playoff implications against a Byrnes squad that has given them all they could handle in two previous meetings this year. In the first region match up the Mavs won 3 games to 2 with the 5th and deciding set going to 15-13. And then on Saturday at the Southside Christian tournament the Mavs won 2 games to 1 in another tight match. With this game being at the Byrnes Gym, another tough match was in order.
In game 1, the home team came out with some fire and energy and the Mavs were hitting balls all over the spacious gym at Byrnes resulting in a 7-1 lead for the Rebels. The Mavs did settle down and make a game of it before falling 25-23.
In game 2, the battle was tight throughout as both teams were playing much better. Senior co-captain Heather Granger came alive in game 2 (finishing the match with 21 kills) and some strong defense by Junior Katie Faith (a match high and season high 39 digs) gave the Mavs what seemed like a 23-21 lead forcing a Byrnes timeout. After a Byrnes kill and a "scoring malfunction" the Rebels suddenly had a 23-22 lead. But the "scoring malfunction" would not get to Mavs and they would prevail over the Rebels 26-24.
In game 3, Granger, and middle hitters Laura Woodlee (8 kills) and Kentra Washington (13 kills) really picked up the pace against the Rebels and had the home team on its heels throughout the game allowing the Mavs to storm to a 25-18 win in a dominating set.
In game 4, another slow start by the Mavs made things look like another 5 setter was in the works. Down 17-12 when, on the strength of Junior Kayla Whitten's serving, the Mavs stormed back to take a 22-18 lead and later closed out the match with a 25-20 victory to bring their region record to 4-4 overall and in 4th place in Region 2 AAAA and looking good for a playoff push.
The Mavs continue region play on Thursday against JL Mann back at home. Game time 6:30. Go Mavs!

Volleyball Kicks Off Season with Sand, Swimming and a Cookout!
Volleyball Looks Good in Preseason Scrimmage... Goes 4-0!
The volleyball season got underway this past Thursday when the varsity Mavs participated in a 5 team scrimmage at the MHS Gymnasium. Once the first digs, sets, blocks and kills of the season were completed, the Mavs were clearly the dominate team at the scrimmage going 4-0! Other teams participating in the scrimmage of 25 minute running clock games were St. Joseph's, Chesnee, Christ Church and region rival Boiling Springs. The final scores of the 4 Mavs Games were as follows:
Mavs 37 St. Joe's 18
Mavs 46 Chesnee 18
Mavs 35 Christ Church 26
Mavs 37 Boiling Springs 25
In Game 1, the Mavs rust showed and the Warriors were able to jump out to a quick 4-1 lead on the good guys. But it didn't take long for the Mavs to gather themselves and get going eventually taking the lead at 7-6 on a Kendra Washington kill and growing the lead to 16-13 on Riverside hitting error. But the home team fought back and eventually took a 23-20 lead. But has been the case all season in these close games, the Mavs would fight back with 2 kills by Laura Woodlee, a block by Katie Faith, kill by Chelsey Scott and the finishing kill by Heather Granger the Mavs won 26-24.
In game 2, the Mavs took control early and raced to a lead of 16-8 early on. The lead was seemingly comfortable at 20-13 but the Mavs took their foot off the gas pedal a little early and the Warriors stormed back eventually tying the score at 22-22. However, three straight points by the Mavs closed the set at 25-22.
Game 3, belonged to Mavs all the way and the victory was finalized at 25-22.
MAVS SHUT DOWN RIVERSIDE IN THREE: 26-24, 25-22, 25-21
After a week off from game action, the Lady Mavs returned to the court on Thursday night for a region match in Greer to face the Warriors of Riverside. Another potentially tough region match as the Warriors had defeated Boiling Springs on Tuesday in straight sets.
