TAYLORS — Briana Nelson was splendid again, and the J.L. Mann girls track team was champion again.

The Patriots collected 521 points and ran away from the pack for their sixth consecutive title in last week's Greenville County meet at Eastside High School.

Nelson, a senior who has signed with the University of Texas, was selected the girls running events MVP after winning the 100 (12.46), the 200 (24.97) and the 400 (56.52).

“What can you say about Briana? Briana's Briana,” Mann coach Rhett Moss said.

Senior Lakeisha Drummond, the high jump champion (4-10), had the Patriots' other individual first-place finish, and they won the 400- and 1,600-meter relays.

“Next is the (Peach Blossom AAA Region meet) and then the state qualifier,” Moss said. “Hopefully we can do all right. We're going to represent J.L. Mann. That's what matters.”

Mauldin's 3,200-meter relay team of seniors Alexa Neiling and Kathleen Jacob and sophomores Carly Wilson and Brittany Williams eclipsed the former meet record of 9 minutes, 50 seconds (set by Mann in 2008) with their time of 9:35.40.

All four established personal bests in their splits on their way to breaking the school record by two seconds.

Mauldin distance coach Delmer Howell said the group is gunning for a state title.

“I'd rather take four kids to the state championship and win one event than take one person and win four,” Howell said. “It's a neat thing.”

Neiling and Jacob won the 3,200 (11:33.71) and the 800 (2:21.26), respectively, and teammate Chandler Floyd won the discus (108 feet, 4.5 inches).

In the boys meet, Woodmont senior Aaron Ramirez was selected the boys running events MVP after winning the 3,200 (9:46.94), the 1,600 (4:27.95) and the 800 (2:00.29).

Ramirez led the Wildcats to a fourth-place finish behind champion Greenville, Wade Hampton and Riverside.

Tyler Tesch, runner-up to Ramirez in the 800 and the 1,600, helped Mauldin's boys take fifth.

The Wendy's High School Heisman is the high school awards program that recognizes student scholar athletes and their accomplishments. In its 14th year, the program continues to touch the lives of high school seniors. 2007 saw a change in the application process allowing students to nominate themselves and encouraging more students to become involved.

Created to showcase high school students who excel in academics, athletics, and community/school leadership, the Wendy's Heisman program celebrates the well-rounded student in a way that other student academic awards and athletic awards do not. As millions of high school students begin preparing their applications for the college admissions process, it's important to set yourself apart with unique distinctions-having a great college essay and top grades alone just isn't enough anymore to cut through the intense competition.
