Mauldin basketball hires Berea's Harrelson

Jeff Harrelson, the boys basketball coach at Berea High School, has been hired to the same position at Mauldin High School.

Harrelson, who led the Bulldogs to four region championships in his nine seasons, replaces Bryan Garmroth, who resigned after five seasons at Mauldin.

“The thing is, I'm completely happy here at Berea,” Harrelson said. “But there's just something about that job that kind of intrigued me. It's an area that's growing. It's a big school, a 4A school. There's good community support and a strong booster club.

“I met with my team this morning, and it's probably the toughest thing I've ever had to do in my life. If you've been somewhere long enough, with the relationships you build, it's not easy. But professionally, I thought it was an opportunity I couldn't pass up.”

Harrelson will remain at Berea as a teacher and the boys golf coach until the end of the school year.
