State Meet information

Senior Dylan Kern placed 2nd at the Upper State meet this weekend automatically advancing him to the State Meet.  Junior Matt Courter placed 4th in his age class and also qualifying for the State Meet.  Congratulations, MAVS!

 Dylan Kern wins Region Championship Title!!

Coach Rhoades report - 

Congratulations go out to all of the varsity members of the Mauldin High School wrestling team for finishing up a successful season.  They are as follows: Matt Achee, Kyle Green, Joe Stone, Josh LeBrun, Kyle Connors, Micah Price, Chase Barbrey, and MacKenzie Brayall.

A special congratulations goes out to the varsity wrestlers who qualified for the Upper State Tournament to be held on February 20th and 21st at Hillcrest High School.  They are as follows: Corey Saindon, Matt Courter, Dylan Kern, Logan Birchfield, and Steven Rosen.

Freshman Corey Saindon placed 4th at 112 pounds to qualify for his first appearance at the Upper State Tournament.  Junior Matt Courter placed third at 119 pounds to qualify for his third straight appearance at Upper State.  Dylan Kern was the lone champion at 125 pounds, and captured a regional championship after winning a close match to Dorman’s Tyquian English, whom he lost to earlier in the season.Junior Logan Birchfield won third place in the 140 pound weight class and is peaking at the right time.  Fellow Junior Steven Rosen won third place by defeating Massey of Hillcrest in overtime at 152 pounds.  Rosen also avenged a previously loss to Massey, and is wrestling at his highest level yet this season.  Keep up the hard work guys!

WOW!!! What a tournament! Your MHS JV/MS team is going to pave the way to MHS wrestling being back on the state map! Coach Rhoades has done a great job preparing these guys for some VERY elite competition, and BOY did they see it here!! There is a reason you have wrestle your way into this tournament, these guys are good!!!
 
Congratulations to Charlie Cook for the 3rd place in the State finals for SC JV/MS wrestlers. That is quite an accomplishment for this young man. Charlie wrestled hard and wrestled often in this tourney. In his second match, Charlie got beat to go to the consolation bracket and took a war wound with him for his efforts (see the attached photo). But, that did not even begin to slow him down. He wrestled his way all the way to 3rd place. Winning convincingly along the way. Way to go Charlie!!!
 
Congratulations to Thomas Stroud. Thomas did not get the war wounds Charlie did, but he did find some early challenges and facing some very stiff competition early and having to wrestle back. He also competed for the bronze medal wrestling in 5 matches and going 3-2.
 
Congratulations to Chad Arness. Chad convincingly won his first match at the State finals 9-4, before falling to some very tough competitors from downstate. Chad never gave up though, and showed a lot of grit and determination throughout the whole tournament.
 
We are going to target this tourney for next year and double/triple the number of wrestlers competing in this tourney. Start practicing and working out guys!!!

JV Wrestling team news-
The Greenville County Tournament provided some of the toughest competition our team has seen this year, but it was another great showing by the MHS JV/MS wrestling team. Along the way 8 out of 18 wrestlers placed 4th or better. Congratulations goes out to:
 
                   Campbell Starr and Charlie Cook – 1st place
 
Both of these guys fought hard won matches, and each was nearly pinned in their final matches. However, BOTH found the guts and determination to make a win happen.
 
                   Chad Arness – 2nd place
 
Chad had to wait increasing amounts of time to work his way through his bracket, but never lost his focus or intensity to reach the Championship match.
 
                   Matt Taylor – 3rd place
 
Matt lost a difficult match early in the tourney to go into the consolation bracket, but from there, he wrestled like the world was on fire to bring home 3rd place.
 
                  Thomas Stroud – 4th place
                  Ryan Foust – 4th place
                  Chase Schlecte – 4th place

Coach Rhoades report -

Congratulations go out to the Mauldin varsity wrestlers for their efforts at the Low Country Invitational in Beaufort this past weekend.

Senior Dylan Kern placed 1st for the Mavericks at 125 pounds.  Kern cruised through his first four matches with three pins and one technical fall (17-2)before decisioning Fort Dorchester’s Alex Reddinger 3-2 in his final match.  Reddinger is currently ranked third at 125 in 4A.  Kern rebounded from a tough loss at Dorman on Thursday and appears to be in championship form heading into a tough matchup Monday against Eastside’s Will Baker (#2 ranked in 3A) and the upcoming Greenville County Tournament this weekend.

Freshman Corey Saindon placed a strong second at 112 pounds.  Saindon pinned three of his opponents and decisioned one (3-1) before losing a tough contest against Fort Dorchester’s 2x state qualifier Clement Metrejean (#4 ranked 112 pounder in 4A).  As a freshman, Saindon has been wrestling at a high level the past week and looks to continue to improve his performance as he heads into another good week of competition.

Junior Matt Courter placed third for the Mavericks at 119 pounds.  Courter pinned his first opponent and decisioned his second opponent 4-0.  Matt then lost a close matchup to Berkley’s Patrick Mestrez 8-6 and was defeated in his final match to Fort Dorchester’s Sonny Bugarin 13-3.  Mestrez is currently ranked 4th at 119 in 4A while Bugarin is ranked #3 at 119, so Courter was able to wrestle some top-notch competition on Saturday to prepare for County.

Joe Stone won two matches in the 130 pound weight class.  Caleb Barber (189) and Logan Birchfield (145) each picked up one victory for the Mavs over the weekend as well.  Congrats goes out again to Kern and Courter for passing the 100 match victory milestone!!!

                   2nd place in brackets - Ryan Foust      - may qualify for state championship(depending on previous qualifiers,)

Each of these guys wrestled 5 matches (not byes) or more, and that is a lot of work. None of them held anything back , and they should be congratulated for their extraordinary efforts!
