Defense sparks Mauldin boys lacrosse team

Mauldin High first-year boys lacrosse coach Wally Crosby had been contacted about assisting the Mavericks last season, but was unable to accept because of conflicting schedules.

Crosby's happy that wasn't the case this year, especially considering Mauldin's start. The Mavericks improved to 3-0 after a 15-3 win at Wade Hampton on Thursday.

“Defense kept us in our first two games and allowed us to win them,” said Crosby, a Jacksonville, Fla., native who played at Presbyterian College. “Everyone has different styles of play, but for us defensively, we want to be as tough and as physical as possible.”

Crosby said the Mavs have three “phenomenal” defensive midfielders in Jonathan Gonzalez, Tim Chappell and senior Tiquention Coleman, who was a standout on Mauldin's football team. Senior captain Austin Grant, Will Craddock and Bennett Trott also lead Mauldin's defensive effort.

“I wish Austin was a freshman so he could be around a few more years,” said Crosby. “You can tell the difference if he's not in there, even in practice.”

When opponents are fortunate enough to penetrate the defense and get a shot on goal, Crosby has confidence in his goalies — Robert Fuson and Jake Norman — to make the save.

“It's really tough to have to pick one of them, so we typically split time between Robert and Jake,” said Crosby. “Whoever had the best practice the day before will typically start. Then we will switch at the quarter or half.”

Offensively, midfielders Thomas Reese, Lee Wiles and Carson Barefoot lead the way, along with the attacker brother tandem of Josh and Alec Borgelt. Josh Borgelt will continue his playing career next year at Randolph College.

“We score mostly out of the midfield because Josh draws so much attention,” Crosby said.

The Mavericks are scheduled to host Hillcrest on Friday. The Mauldin girls team, which also began the season 3-0, will take on the Rams at 5:30 p.m., prior to the boys game.

Boys Lacrosse Team Continues Winning Streak

Mauldin’s Borgelt takes lacrosse to college

Mauldin High senior Josh Borgelt will get an opportunity that a lot of high school lacrosse players in Greenville County can only dream of having.

“I enjoy lacrosse, and I want to play at the next level,” said Borgelt, who has decided to attend Randolph College, where lacrosse is played not just as a club sport but as of last year in NCAA competition.

As an NCAA Division III lacrosse program, Randolph can’t offer athletic scholarships. But the liberal arts college in Lynchburg, Va., is part of a trend of schools establishing lacrosse programs as an incentive to attract students.

Borgelt, an attackman, was the third-leading scorer for the Mavericks in 2009. In a dozen games last season, he scored 14 goals, had nine assists and averaged 1.92 points per game.

With tryouts this week at Mauldin High, Borgelt expects to begin his fourth season with the Mavericks.

He said he knew there was something special about lacrosse the first time he picked up a stick, although he admits to being a bit confused when he initially watched a game.

“I started playing, and I got better at it,” Borgelt said.

His younger brother Alec introduced him to the sport. A junior at Mauldin, the younger Borgelt scored four goals and had two assists for the Mavericks last season.

Josh Borgelt credited former Mauldin High head lacrosse coach Ed Ryan with letting him know that Randolph was starting a lacrosse program. Ryan learned about possible opportunities for his players opening up at Randolph while attending an NCAA Division I championship game, Borgelt said.

Borgelt visited the campus and liked what he saw. “I’m going up there in April and watch a game,” Borgelt said, adding that he’s excited about getting to college and being part of building the lacrosse program at Randolph
