The Lady Mavs JV Volleyball took to the road on Saturday for trip to Lexington, SC to play in the White Knoll Lady Timberwolves tournament - and the Lady Mavs brought their A game much to the chagrin of the hosts and the other tournament teams.  While playing some of their best ball of the season, the Lady Mavs swept all 5 matches and brought the championship plaque back to the Upstate!

In the opening match of Pool Play, the Lady Mavs took on the host White Knoll Lady Timberwolves.  The Lady Mavs started out strong and surged to 15-10 lead midway through the first game.  However, the horst Wolves would not roll over easily and fought back to tie the score at 17 and later took a 24-21 lead.  But the Lady Mavs would not fold.  With Outside Hitter, Chelsey Scott taking serving, the Mavs scored the last 5 points of the game and won game 1 26-24.  Game 2 was much of the same with neither team taking a big lead, however, when it came down to crunch time, the Lady Mavs turned up the heat putting away game 2, 25-22 and winning match 1.  Laura Woodlee (4 kills), Chelsey Scott (3 kills, 3 aces), Megan Archer (3 kills), and Kayla Whitten (3 kills) led the Lady Mavs.

In Match 2 of Pool Play, the Lady Mavs met the Cardinals of Cardinal-Newman.  The Mavs started out strong against the Cardinals moving out to a quick early lead and never looked back, taking Game 1 25-11.  In game 2, it was more of the same - and then some.  With a .500 hitting percentage, the Lady Mavs dominated from the start and destroyed the Cardinals 25-7.  For the match, the Lady Mavs were led by Laura Woodlee and Chelsey Scott with 4 kills each.  Woodlee also chipped in with 4 aces during the match as did Kayla Whitten.

In the final match of pool play, the Lady Mavs took on Airport High School.  In this match, the Lady Mavs started out slowly and Airport took a 14-12 lead.  Following a timeout by Coach Carly, Libero Chloe Ewing served 5 straight points to put the Mavs up 17-14.  Airport quickly fought back and took the next 6 points to go up 20-17.  But the Lady Mavs would not be denied.  Setter Kayla Whitten served the Lady Mavs right back on top 23-20 and the Lady Mavs closed out game 1 with a kill off the block by Right Side Hitter Katie Faith.

In game 2 the Lady Mavs started out fast flying and the Airport had no chance.  Kayla Whitten started off serving for the Mavs they quickly took a 13-4 lead.  After a brief exchange of points made the score 18-11, Laura Berglind served the Lady Mavs to 24-11 and the Mavs quickly closed out pool plan with a 25-12 victory.  The Lady Mavs were led in this match by Katie Faith (5 kills), Kayla Whitten (3 aces, 12 assists, 1 kill) and Laura Berglind (3 aces).

In the Gold Bracket Semi-Final, the Mavs took on Ben Lippen High School - and they were no match for the Lady Mavs.  In Game 1, the Lady Mavs took control from the start and easily rolled to a 25-13 victory.  In Game 2, it was much of the same with the Mavs winning 25-17.  For the match the Mavs had a fantastic hitting percentage of .400 led by Megan Archer (6 kills, 1 block), Katie Faith (4 kills), Kristina Brown (3 kills), Chelsey Scott (3 kills) and Laura Woodlee (2 kills, 4 aces, 1 block).

In the tournament final, it was a rematch with the host school, White Knoll.  In game 1, the Mavs again came out strong taking an early lead and never letting the hosts get close and taking game 1 25-16.  Game 2 was a bit of a seesaw affair to start with neither team able to take control until a 17-17 tie was broken by some strong defense and hitting by the Mavs and when the last hit by the Timberwolves went wide, the Lad Mavs were tournament champions, winning game 2 25-20.  In the last match the Lady Mavs were led by Chelsey Scott (6 kills, 1 ace), Katie Faith (5 kills), Kayla Whitten (8 assists) and defensive leader Chloe Ewing who was named to the all tournament team.
