The Mauldin High Varsity Volleyball team went on the road Wednesday
evening to prove their improved spelling proficiency ... that there is no
"I" in "team" and that their arent near as many "E"s in "winning" as there
are when you "lose".  The venue was the Greenville High Red Raiders Gym.
After the Junior varsity took care of business by holding their opponents
to single digit points in two quick wins, the Varsity Lady Mavs took the
court intent upon ending their recent 2 match losing streak by
communicating better, improving teamwork, and playing with the swagger and
confidence missing against Woodmont on Monday.

Game one saw The ladies in Orange take early command at 7-2 when
Sophmore Heather Granger went on a 6 point service run which included an
Ace and was aided by 3 blocks by Senior Captain Rachel Woodlee. Senior
Setter Haley Register assisted her frontline in the first frame by setting
up Hitters Jordan Bowling and Jordan Stovall for a pair of Kills each.
Defensively, Sophomore Libero Dana Landers contributed 6 digs while Stovall
put up a pair of blocks to spot the Lady Mav netters to a 19-9 advantage.
The Red Raiders of Greenville responded to their coach's vociferous urging
and went on a 7 to 2 point run of their own aided by a pair of Mav service
errors to close the margin to 21-16, but kills by Melissa Unger on a
Greenville overpass and another thundering smash by Bowling off a set by
Junior Kim Minor, stopped the run at 24-17. After a service error by each
team, Mauldin prevailed in the first game 25-18.

The second game saw the Red Raiders go out to a quick but small and
short-lived lead by serving the Mav setters to disturb the Mauldin attack,
but a great save by Bowling at the visitors bench, a set by Senior Tiffany
Smith, and a  Bowling Kill  started a roll by our Lady Mavs. Woodlee went
on a 3 point service run to regain the lead 5-3. It was at this point that
the Mavs took control and played their  best volleyball in two weeks.
Setters Minor and Register distributed the rock perfectly in front of
Bowling, Woodlee, Stovall, Granger, and senior Morgan Gregg for
unreturnable kills. Senior defensive specialist Tiffany Smith, Landers,
Stovall, Granger, and Gregg added diving digs, Woodlee another block, and
Landers a well placed backrow hit to an open spot in the Raider defense, as
the Mavs charged ahead to take a 13-4 lead.  Senior Co-Captain and leaper
Jordan Bowling had the hottest hand on the frontline in game 2 with 7 kills
as the Ladies of Mauldin extended their lead to 22-9, before Greenville
could right their sinking ship. Minor finished the job after a few Raider
points by serving the final two points - the last of which was scored on a
Gregg spike off a set by Minor.  Mauldin takes Game Two 25-13 !

Maybe it was the home team - Greenville's  resolve, ...or maybe
Mauldin relaxed too much in the early part of game 3, but at the midway
point Mauldin led by only 2 points , 13-11 thanks to some service errors,
an "in the net" and a "lift" call against the Mavs, and several misdirected
passes and sets. Some concern and not too distant memories pervaded the
faithful Mauldin fan following, but these fears were dispelled when
Captains Woodlee and Bowling re-asserted themselves at the net with hard
spikes to the floor off of sets by Register.  Woodlee followed the Kills up
with an Ace in a 4 point service run to put the Lady Mavs in front for good
18-13.  Next it was Senior Alex Evans turn to dominate the game with a dig,
a block, and a kill (assist from Minor) in the next 4 point span, putting
Minor at the service line again to end the game and match with an Ace in
the final two points won by our Lady Mavs 25-14.

Come support our Lady Mavs as they hit the road again in an important
Region match against perennial powerhouse and defending region Champ -
Dorman High on the Dorman Campus in Spartanburg, Tuesday September 23rd at
6:30 pm.
