Date: Sep. 09, 2008
Time: 07:00 PM
Location: Riverside High School

The Mauldin Lady Maverick Volleyball team went on the road for the
first time this young season.  Tuesday evening's match was against
perennial 3A powerhouse and reigning Peach Blossom Region Champs, Riverside
High School. Early on in game 1 the Lady Mavs had to know this opponent was

not going to roll over for Mauldin's strong, accomplished, and senior laden
team.  The Lady Warriors showed their strong attacking game and powerful
service game from the outset.  The first game stayed close with Setters
Haley Register and Kimberly Minor dishing out 4 and 3 assists respectively
to the Mauldin front line players - Jordan Bowling (2 Kills), Alex Evans
(2), Heather Granger (2), and Jordan Stovall (1) to pace the offense in the
first frame. Senior Middle and captain Rachel Woodlee knocked down 2
blocks, while Sophmore Libero Dana Landers and Senior captain Jordan
Bowling each contributed 6 digs to keep the game close as the Mavs were
down only 1 point at 13-14 just past midway. But the Lady Warriors took
control at that point by capitalizing on unforced errors and creating
errors with their stingy defense and attacking offense.  The ladies in Red
and Royal pulled away from that point forward, winning the first game
The second game started much like the first - long defensive rallies
until one team made an error or executed their passes, sets, and spikes to
perfection.  The match was heating up and the ladies in Orange and White
looked up to the challenge as the Mavs offense increased its intensity.  In
Game 2,  aces were scored by Woodlee (2) ,Melissa Unger (2), and Granger
(1), ...while Kills set up by Register and Minor were recorded by Woodlee
(3),  Bowling (3), Granger (3), and Stovall (1).  The defense was standing
up to the Riverside pressure as well with Landers (4), Bowling (3), Minor
(2), Register (2), and senior defensive specialist Tiffany Smith (2)
lifting digs from, and leaving skin on, the RHS gym floor.  Senior Alex
Evans was hot at the net in game 2, roofing 3 blocks back onto the Warrior
hitters. Junior Melissa Unger, Woodlee, and Granger also added blocks in
the second frame.  With the Lady Mavs down 15-19 late in the game, Senior
Jordan Bowling went on a 5 point service run (including an Ace) to give the
Mav netters the lead at 20-19.  The warriors proved just that however as
they came back to retake the lead. Woodlee and Granger spikes re-tied the
game at 23 before Riverside smashed a kill and finished the game with an
ace to take a 2 game lead in the match, 23-25.
After a gut checking intermission talk and challenge by Coach
Christie Plecha, our Lady Mavs came out determined to reduce their errors
and attack the Lady Warriors with equal ferocity in Game 3.  Libero Dana
Landers proved up to the task defensively, lifting 5 more digs to the
offense, where Junior Kim Minor took over and dished 8 assists for kills to
Woodlee (5), Bowling (3), Granger (3), and Stovall (2)....with help from
Register, Granger, and Stovall  for the balance of the assists.  A strategy
of Riverside's was to serve to the Mauldin setters to disrupt the offense,
but in game 3 it was not to be for the Lady Warriors.  The Mav netters
showed their depth of well rounded talent and resolve as Jordan Bowling had
2 of her 3 kills and an Ace in the early going to pace MHS to a 12-8 lead
...only to see the powerful Riverside team go on a run and tie the score at
15 all.  Alex Evans had a block followed by a 3 point service run to spot
the Mavs up 18-15.  Several points later, a block by Woodlee, a diving dig
by Landers and a Kill from Woodlee's long and strong right arm, sparked a 5
point service run by Bowling that included 2 aces.  The final point saw a
dig by Register, an assist from Granger, and a deep lob kill by Landers
over the heads of the drawn in Riverside team - Mauldin Wins game 3   25-17
Hopeful of a paramount comeback, down 1 game to 2, the lady Mav
netters dug in for a crucial 4th game. Kim Minor started Mauldin off on the
right foot with an Ace and two more service points to give the mavs a lead
3-0.  but the experienced and unshakable Riverside team fought back to knot
the score at 6.  Jordan Stovall assumed brief control, recording a kill on
a Riverside overpass then serving 2 straight Aces to see the Lady Mavs up
9-6 but again the Lady Warriors fought back with their relentless attack
and tireless defense. Landers and the Mauldin defense wouldnt tire either.
The sophomore dug 6 more Riverside Hits in the 4th frame, transferring the
attack to Minor and Register who put the rock in front of Woodlee, Stovall,
and Evans for 7 more kill points. Evans followed a spike with a 3 point
service run mid-game to put the Mavs back in front 12-10.  It was then
Riverside's turn to rally in their home gym in front of their football team
and parents as they stunned the lady Mavs by going on 7 points to 1 run to
go up 13-17.  Jordan Bowling smashed a kill off of a Register set, then
aced a serve in route to a 3 point Mauldin run that brought the Mav netters
back to within a point of Riverside.  Long defensive rallies
ensued...Smith, Minor, and Register dug, Woodlee, Evans, Minor, and Landers
had kills,  Woodlee and Bowling blocked. Stovall added a Kill and served
two Mauldin points as the Orange and white took a lead 21-19....but the
Lady Warriors wouldnt quit, they didnt tense, they kept up their attack and
forced the lady Mavs into errors and sending free balls back into the teeth
of the Riverside attack.  The home Warriors finished the game with a 6
point run that ended on an Ace. Game and match - MHS 21 -  RHS 25.
Disappointed but undaunted - humbled but determined, knowing what
they need to work on, and shown what it will take to be the kind of team
they can be, our Mauldin Lady Mavs Varsity Volleyball team returns to
Mauldin for a home match next Monday (Sept. 15th) against Woodmont at 6:30
pm.  Come see the Lady Mavs regain their momentum and winning form !
