(2008 - 2009) - Volleyball - Varsity

vs. Northwestern WIN - MATCH 1: 27-25, 25-18 MATCH 2: 25-18. 25-10 ,

Date: Sep. 06, 2008
Time: 11:00 AM
Location: Mauldin High School

The Northwestern Trojan Volleyball Team travelled down from Rock Hill on a beautiful Saturday morning for a pair of shortened matches and brought
the stiffest test the Mauldin Lady Mavs Netters have faced to date in the
young 2008 campaign.  Game one was a back and forth affair with neither
team getting much of an advantage over the other, until a few Mauldin
errors saw the Lady Trojans go up 19-15 coming into the stretch.  The Lady
Mavs stiffened and rallied back with a big Kill from Jordan Stovall
followed by a Kill and an Ace from Rachel Woodlee to knot the game at 23.
The game extended into extra points as neither team could get ahead by the
necessary two point margin.  The defense was tested all game during
numerous long rallies, but Libero Dana Landers and  Woodlee proved up to
the task with 3 digs apiece and Jordan Bowling made two key blocks.
Offensively, Setter Haley Register knew who had the hot hand as she set up
Woodlee for 6 kills in the first game.  Setter Kim Minor chipped in 3
assists as well including 2 to Alex Evans who put down a pair of big
left-handed spikes. Finally the Lady Mavs prevailed in a nail-biting Game 1
by a score of 27 to 25.
Game two of the match started much the same as the first until, with
the game knotted at 7 - 7,  Junior Melissa Unger went on a 5 point service
run to give the Mavs some separation.  From there the Mav Offense showed
muscle as Setters Kim Minor and Haley Register layed up 7 and 5 assists
respectively ... distributing the ball for all of the hitters to knock down
Kills (Alex Evans -3, Heather Grainger - 3, Jordan Stovall - 2, Rachel
Woodlee - 2, Jordan Bowling - 1, and Melissa Unger - 1).  Credit the
Trojans however, because there was no quit in them.  Nortwestern went on a
4 point run of their own late in the game to come back within 5 points of
the Mavs at 23-18. Defensively, Jordan Stovall and Woodlee had 3 and 2
blocks respectively for the Mavs. Dana Landers must have seemed everywhere
to the Trojan attack as she got up 7 digs in the second frame.  Kim Minor
and Melissa Unger also contributed 4 and 2 digs respectively.  Haley
Register concluded game two and match one with an ace to end the game at
25-18 - Another Mavs game and match Win !

The second match saw our Lady Mavs continue to show great teamwork
and better communication to reduce the errors that hurt them in the first
match.  The Lady Trojans in Purple came back out after the break with
resolve however, and continued to play fine defense, keeping the ball in
play, hoping for Mauldin mistakes, and looking for opportunities to attack.
Alex Evans, Melissa Unger, and Heather Granger were having none of it in
the first game of the second match, thwarting the Northwestern attack with
2 blocks apiece, while Woodlee and Jordan Bowling each added another block.
On the occasions that the Northwestern attack got through the block in this
game,  it was Senior Defensive specialist Tiffany Smith who led the defense
with 5 big digs.  Offensively, setters Minor and Register used hustle and
soft hands to distribute the Rock deftly to 5 different hitters for point
scoring spikes.  Junior Kim Minor also made a diving save into the Mauldin
bench at the feet of her coach to keep a point alive for the Mavs late in
the game....and score a brownie with Coach Plecha.  The Lady Mavs serving
was sharper in the second match as Bowling, Grainger, and Minor all
recorded Aces - Minor's sealed the game for the Mavs 25 to 18.

Some concern on the Mauldin side was evident as Senior captain Jordan
Bowling had to leave the match before the next game, but Morgan Gregg
calmed any and all fears by filling in admirably for Bowling in the fourth
game as a presence at the net and defensively - adding a dig to help the
Mauldin lady netters stay sharp against the Northwestern squad.  But this
game was one in which a senior and a pair of Sophmores led the way and in
finally breaking the Trojan's spirit... Sophmore Dana Landers was all over
the backcourt with 6 digs, an Assist, and a Kill off of the foot of the
opposing Libero.  Senior Haley Register had a diving dig and did a great
job of setting and serving in the final game, but it was Sophmore Heather
Granger who nailed the coffin on Northwestern with 2 strong Kills, and 5
Aces during a 9 point service run to end the game and match 25-10 in favor
of the Lady Mavericks.
