 25-19, 25-16, 23-25, 25-17

Mav's varsity volleyball gets off to a great start or 2008 with a big 3-1 win over Southside Christian School in a pre-season scrimmage.  The Mavs went 25-19, 25-16, 23-25, and 25-17 to easily take down the always strong Southside team.

Sophomore Heather Granger scored the first point of the season with a stuffed block on the opening play, then went on to serve nine points in a row to put Mauldin way up.  Strong hitting from senior Jordan Bowling and junior Jordan Stovall, and smart finesse shots by senior Rachel Woodlee kept Mauldin on top throughout the first set.  Senior Alex Evans was always in the mix with aggressive play for Mauldin, quick at the net and a good eye for both blocking and putting the ball in the "hole".

In the second game, the Mavs got off to a slow start, down 4-0.  A string of jumpserves by senior Tiffany Smith, a sneak attack on 2 down the line from Rachel Woodlee, strong hitting, and the quickness of sophomore libero Dana Landers got us back on top and kept us there.  The Mavs frustrated Southside's offense attempts, with great digs from Landers, Smith, Register and Granger.

The third game was back and forth, with the Mavs losing 23-25.  An ace by junior Melissa Unger, a nice run of low, deceptive serves by junior setter Kim Minor, and several great fisted net plays by senior setter Haley Register kept us neck and neck.  Senior Morgan Gregg was back in action as right side hitter after extended illness last year, and contributed some nice offensive pushes.

The Mavs sealed the deal in the fourth game, taking the lead from the start.  A long service by Unger, beastly hitting from Bowling, Stovall, Woodlee and Granger, and smart play by all resulted in an easy victory.
