MAVS LOSE TO HILLCREST IN A HARD FOUGHT THREE GAMES: 20-25, 21-25, 23-25

On Tuesday night, the Lady Mavs completed the first pass through the always tough Region 2 AAAA schedule, matching up with the Hillcrest Rams at the MHS Gym.  As is usually the case with the matches with Hillcrest, the crowd was larger than normal with a large student contingent cheering on the Mavs.

In game 1, the Mavs looked a bit tight to start with many receiving and hitting errors and the Rams jumped to a quick 6-2 lead.  The Rams continued their good play and strecthed the lead to 21-10 but the Mavs would fight back.  A 9-1 run by the Mavs fueled by kills from Laura Woodlee, Heather Granger and Katie Faith brought the Mavs to within 22-19 but the lead was too large to overcome and the Rams took game 1, 25-20.

In game 2, the Mavs carried the momentum over from the end of game 1 and kept this game close throughout.  Neither team could muster more than a 2 point lead throughout and the teams were tied at 20 all when the experienced Rams made the crucial plays down the stretch to take game 2, 25-21.

In game 3, the Mavs were able to get off to a quick start with Faith, Kentra Washington and Granger contributing kills and Dana Landers playing solid defense on the back line, staking the Mavs to a 6-2 lead.  But the Rams fought back to a 8 all tie and it remained close until the Mavs pulled ahead 20-18 on a Landers ace forcing the Rams coach to call a timeout - and a good one it was.  The Rams immediately pulled even at 20.  With the Rams leading 23-22, the best rally of the night occurred with some strong hitting on both sides and some incredible defense that finally ended with a Woodlee kill tying the score at 23.  But the Rams went to their all state outside hitter Kylie Haun for two kills late and the Rams won 25-23.

The Mavs played well with the Rams, who are undefeated in region play.  If they can eliminate the mistakes they can play with and defeat the Rams in the rematch at HHS in mid October.  Until then, the Mavs finish the first pass through region play at 3-3 and tied for 3rd place in the region behind Hillcrest and Dorman.  On Thursday, the second pass through the region slate begins with a rematch at Boiling Springs.  Go Mavs!
