MAVS CLAIM VICTORY OVER WADE HAMPTON IN THREE:  25-12, 25-22, 26-24

In the second of back to back to back matches this week, the Lady Mavs headed across town on Wednesday night to a rematch with the Generals of Wade Hampton High School.  Just like when these schools met back on the last day of August, the Lady Mavs started hot in Game 1, especially Sophomore Middle Hitter Kentra Washington who abused the General defense early and often finishing the game with 5 kills in 6 attempts.  Two aces by Katie Faith at 22 and 23 and two pounding kills by Heather Granger on the penultamate and final points gave the Mavs a 25-12 win in game 1.

In game 2, it was the Generals who started strong jumping to a quick 5-0 lead and prompting Coach Plecha to use a quick timeout and refocus her Maverick squad - and refocus they did.  Kills across the front line by Granger, Faith, Washington and Middle Hitter Laura Woodlee brought the Mavs back to even at 12.  From there the two teams battled even with ties at 14, 18, 19 and 22.  But then the experienced Mavs took over forcing errors by the Generals on the next two points and Senior Co-Captain Dana Landers served an ace on game point for a 25-22 win.

Game 3 was tight throughout.  Neither team could gain a lead of more than 2 points until the Mavs stretched a 10 all tie to a 14-10 lead with a kill by Faith, a WH error, a kill by Granger and an ace by Faith.  But the home team had some fight left and retied the score at 16.  The Mavs rebuilt the lead to 20-17 but the home team again came back to take a 24-22 lead and it looked like the game 3 bug had bitten the Mavs again.  But experience shined through for the Mavs on this night.  Woodlee's kill and service ace tied the score at 24.  A WH error gave game point to the Mavs and Granger's kill earned the Mavs the game at 26-24 and the match, 3 games to none.

Next up is perennial region front runner and defending state champion Dorman in Roebuck on Thursday night.  Go Mavs!

Mavericks volleyball rolls at Wade Hampton

The Mauldin volleyball teams continue to roll as both the JV and varsity teams swept Wade Hampton on the road Wednesday night.

“I am VERY happy,” said head coach Christy Plecha about her team’s 2-0 record on the road the past two nights. “We’re fixing our mistakes and our blocking has really been on. Kendra Washington (sophomore middle blocker) had seven blocks and several kills tonight. She did really well.”

The JV team once again set the tone, winning 25-21 and 25-14. The varsity won 25-12, 25-22 and 26-24 to improve to 5-2 overall. For the second consecutive night, the Mavericks were able to avoid the third game curse that plagued them in recent weeks.

“I hope so,” said Plecha of that trend. “I think they’ve learned that the game’s not over until that third game is in the victory column. Last night at J.L. Mann was an eye opener for them when they realized what happens when they don’t get cocky with a 2-0 lead.”

The Mavericks complete the three-night road trifecta by playing at Dorman Thursday night.
