WAKE UP CALL?  MAVS BEAT BYRNES IN 5: 23-25, 24-26, 25-22, 25-18, 15-13

Alarm clocks were ringing early Thursday across Mauldin and Simpsonville as Coach Christy Plecha called her beleaguered Lady Mavs volleyball team to the court for an early morning practice after two straight heartbreaking losses the previous nights.  But early on in the night's match against tough region foe Byrnes, it looked as though the heartache might extend to a third evening.

Game 1 of this match started out with some strong hitting on both side with both teams smacking kills to the floor and off blockers early and often with few errors between the sides.  However, with the score tied at 7, the Senior Co-Captain Dana Landers serving run of two aces with kills by Juniors Laura Woodlee and Katie Faith gave the Mavs an 11-7 lead.  The lead stayed fairly consistent until a Byrnes rally midway through the game tied it up at 17.  The Mavs again pushed up by 3 on a kill by Senior Co-Captain Heather Granger at 20-17.  But Byrnes would toughen and after the Mavs held the lead at 22-19 the Rebels had 5 kills over the closing points and took game 1, 25-23.

In Game 2, neither team took control with the teams battling through ties at 8, 9, 11, 12 and 17 before another late Rebel run forged a 23-20 lead for the visitors.  The Mavs would not go easy with Woodlee and Sophomore Kendra Washington providing kills to extend the match at 24 all but Byrnes would get the last two and take a 2-0 lead.

The Mavs were now in the same position they had put their last two opponents and faced the same uphill climb.  In games 3 and 4, Granger started to assert her presence and Junior Setter Kayla Whitten would set up her multiple times throughout these games.  Grangers 9 kills in these two games coupled with 8 from Faith and 5 from Woodlee allowed the Mavs to take games 3 and 4 and set up the fifth game showdown for the win.

In game 5, the Mavs started on the right side with a Woodlee kill for 1-0 lead but the Rebels would go on a mini run and take a 5-2 lead.  A timeout by Plecha would settle the Mavs and kills by Washington (2), Faith and Granger would turn this deficit into a 10-7 Mav lead.  But then the Rebels would take their turn in this fight and turned that into 13-11 advantage.  A final timeout by Coach P would light the final fire however.  The Mavs pulled to 13-12 on a Woodlee kill, 13 all on a Granger kill, 14-13 on another Granger kill and with Faith's service ace on match point the Mavs had pulled the comeback and won game five, 15-13 in a thriller!

The wake up call did it's trick and the alarm clocks will again ring early on Saturday as the Mavs participate in the Hillcrest Ram Invitational tournament all day at the HHS Gym before heading back into region play next week with games at JL Mann and Dorman sandwiched around a rematch with Wade Hampton all on the road.  Go Mavs!
