MAVS LOSE AGAINST TOUGH BOILING SPRINGS IN 5: 27-25; 25-21, 13-25. 21-25, 8-15

On Tuesday night the Boiling Springs Bulldogs invaded the MHS Gym for the first region match of the season for the Lady Mavs.  Everyone in the gym knew that we were in for tight match as they always are in the tough Region 2AAAA.

In Game 1, both teams started out a bit tight with many hitting errors and service errors but the game remained close at 9-9.  A mini run fueled by a couple of Laura Woodlee kills gave the Mavs the edge  and a little breathing room at 14-10 but the Bulldogs and their two big hitting seniors Kayla McAvoy and Kassey Talley kept the Bulldogs close and eventually pulled even at 23.  A BSHS Ace gave the Bulldogs a lead at 24-23 but the server gave it right back with a service error to retie the score at 24.  However, the Mavs returned the favor with a service error of their own to once again put the Bulldogs within one point of the win.  But a Kentra Washington kill knotted the score once again, a Katie Faith kill gave the Mavs a lead and finally a final hitting error by the Bulldogs left the Mavs with a 27-25 Game 1 victory.

In Game 2, the teams again exchanged points and were again tied at 9 midway through the game.  The Mavs again responded with kills by Woodlee, Faith and Senior Heather Granger to take a 18-15 lead.  Two additional kills by Faith gave the Mavs a lead of 24-18 and after a brief service run by the Bulldogs McAvoy brought the Dogs close, she served the last into the net for a 25-21 Mavs victory.

Game 3 was the beginning of the turnaround for the Bulldogs.  The Mavs have had trouble in game 3 in each of their matches this year and for some reason the trend continued on this night.  After another tight start that had the Mavs trailing just 8-7 the Dogs went on a roll and the Mavs went to sleep with the Dogs taking the game 25-13.

Game 4 was nip and tuck.  The two teams were tied at 1, 2, 3, 5, 9, 11 and 13 until the two Bulldogs seniors that are headed to USC-Upstate and UT-Chattanooga next year took over.  They helped the BSHS team take the 13-13 tie to a 19-13 lead and although the Mavs were able to cut this lead to 23-21 behind Washington and Granger kills, the Dogs won game 4, 25-21.

Game 5 got off to bad start for the home team, falling behind 6-1 and the Mavs were never able to overcome the slow start falling 15-8.  A tough night and a tough way to start region play but no time to dwell.  The Mavs return to action tonight in a rematch of a match last week against Greenville at the Red Raiders Gym.  Game time 6:30.  Go Mavs!
