Pool Game 2: Mauldin vs Byrnes "C": W 6-7

After a catered (by the parents) lunch, the Lady Mavs returned to the field against the Byrnes "C" team.    The Byrnes team took the lead on a two-out, error fueled rally in the top of the fifth, but those runs were quickly answered in the bottom of the frame.  Time expired in the sixth, as the Rebels failed to plate another run.  A. Jackson and N. Smith reached on fielding errors in the bottom of the sixth, and N. Songolia laced a solid hit to score "Boston" to win the game.

With two wins, the Junior Mavs had earned their pool's bid to the Championship game.

Championship Game: Mauldin vs Byrnes JV: W 6-2

After two innings where each team stranded 3 base runners, the top of the Mauldin order began the third inning. Five runs had crossed the place before Byrnes recorded their first out, a force out at home by the catcher after a swinging bunt. One more run scored on a passed ball before a sharply hit liner was snagged by the Byrnes second baseman and thrown to third to double up the runner.  The bottom of the inning ended with a double play on a fly to D't. Garrett in right who threw to C. Scott who tagged the runner who had failed to tag up at first after the catch. The fourth inning was pretty quiet.

The Mauldin fifth ended as the third, with a liner snagged by the Rebel shortstop this time, who tagged the runner attempting to stumble back to second on the catch.  After a strike out, a hit past short and a walk, the Byrnes shortstop popped up to short for an infield fly rule call; a second out.  Then the Rebel left fielder sliced a long ball out to the corner of her own field, netting a triple and driving in two runs for Byrnes.  A strikeout closed the inning for Byrnes.

Mauldin loaded the bases in the sixth, with one out, but failed to capitalize.  The Rebels went down in order in the bottom.   All the offense the Mavs managed in the top of the seventh was a B't. Fowler single, which turned out fine as the Byrnes could not score on the smothering Mauldin defense.

Lady Mavs win the game and the tournament.
