It would be the one that mattered most.  On Friday evening, at home
against Region 2 second place Boiling Springs Bulldogs, who with only one
loss (to Mauldin in late march), trailed Mauldin by only a game.  The Lady
Bulldogs were cocky and seemingly eager to play.  The Lady Mavs seemed calm
and confident on the outside, but we would have to see how this one played
out !
Senior pitcher Ashley Bagwell sandwiched a lone hit by Alaynie Page
between strikeouts of the 1st, 3rd, and 4th batters in the Boiling Springs
order in the top of the first.  In the top of the second she struck out one
, caught a line drive by another, and watched third baseman Brainna Davis
and 1st baseman Amelia Gillentine retire the third, after a communication
error and a throwing error in shallow rightfield allowed a baserunner
aboard and to move to third base.  No damage was done on the scoreboard,
even if some eardrums in the Mauldin dugout got hurt.  The Lady Mavs drew
first blood in the top of the first when leading and leadoff hitter, Kenzi
Corn reached on an error, moved to second on a Bulldog passed ball, and
scored on a throwing error by the Boiling Springs 3rd baseman with Jordan
Stovall hustling down the baseline.  It was the only run Mauldin would
score for three sluggish offensive innings. In the top of the second,
Brooke Barnhill slapped a one out hit into the 5-6 hole.  She stole second
base, but wouldnt get past third as the next two batters tested the Boiling
Springs shortstop unsuccessfully.  Kenzi Corn led off the bottom of the
third with a hit and was sacrificed to second by a nice bunt from Bria
Barnhill, but the usually reliable and powerful #3 and 4 hitters in the
Mauldin lineup failed to deliver this time, flying out to left and
grounding to short respectively.
Sensing angst or tightness from the home team,  Boiling Springs bore
down and  seemed intent to rally.  A leadoff walk was followed by a
fielders choice to second - Bria Barnhill threw to Landers to get the lead
runner for the first out.  Alaynie Page singled again and the Lady bulldogs
had runners on first and second with one out.  Aggressively, they tried a
double steal, but Stovall threw quick, hard...and low to third where
Landers was coming over to cover. Landers fielded the short hop and tagged
a shin before the runner reached third - nice play, two outs !  A single to
right by Brittney Smith scored Page from second a few pitches later.  The
next batter tried the right side also, but Brooke Barnhill caught the fly
to end the top half of the third inning.  At the end of three, the score
would still be 1 to 1.  Boiling Springs led off the 4th with a hit and a
walk and seemed to have taken the momentum, but Bagwell stiffened and
struck out three in a row to end the threat in the 4th.  Similarly, in the
top of the 5th with one out, a walk was issued.  Bagwell and Stovall
conspired and delivered a pair of strikeouts to the 3rd and 4th batters in
the Bulldog order to quell the ruckus in the visitors dugout.
Mauldin's bottom of the fourth would make a strong effort to quiet
the ruckus from the visitors stands.  After a groundout to short,
Gillentine reached on an error by the same shortstop. Next, Brooke Barnhill
and Ashley Bagwell both singled, Bagwell's bringing Gillentine across the
plate to give the Mavs the lead again.  Freshman Brianna Davis then smashed
a double into the leftfield corner to score Barnhill.   Kenzi Corn then
spanked  a hit to the right side that scored Davis before the third out was
recorded on a well struck ball to the leftfielder.  Dana landers led off
the bottom of the 5th with a basehit up the middle.  she moved to second on
an error by the Bulldog 1st baseman and scored on a Brooke Barnhill RBI
drive to rightfield, misplayed by their rightfielder.  After another out,
Mauldin could relax and take care of business defensively with a 5-1 lead.
Boiling Springs made a little noise in the 6th with a leadoff hit and a
bad-bounce error that put two on with no outs.  A sacrifice bunt put those
two runners in scoring position and a hit batter loaded the bases. But
Bagwell again showed her toughness by striking out the next two batters and
leaving the bases full of Black and Red partisan spectators.  Mauldin's 6th
was quiet. three shots taken at the Boiling Springs shortstop and three
outs into the books, interrupted only by a beaning changeup to Kenzi Corn
that put her on first without a wimper.
Last Chance for the visitors and they were in the heart of their
order.  Dana Landers and Amelia Gillentine combined to retire the #2 and #3
hitters to start the top of the seventh inning.  Then a fielding error on a
bouncer back to Bagwell put their cleanup hitter aboard.  Boiling Springs'
Janney Piazza got her third hit of the game - this time a double off the
leftfield fence to plate her fellow infielder.  The next bouncer that came
back to the mound was fielded cleanly and thrown well to Gillentine for the
third out that ended the game that meant Mauldin's Lady Mavs had clinched
their third successive Region 2 Softball Championship with two region games
to play !  Congratulations to Mauldin coaches Joseph Terry and Doug
Shaw...and to all the hard working and winning young ladies in Orange,
white, and brown !  GO MAVS !!!
Next week, Mauldin's varsity Softball team travels to Wren on Monday
(6:00 pm) for a non-conference contest, and then to Byrnes Tuesday      at
6:00 for a region re-match between playoff-bound teams.  Friday April 23rd
