THUD !  LADY MAVS DEFEATED IN COMPETITIVE TRI-MATCH - Come see them take on Greenville at Greenville - Thursday night @ 6:30 PM.

The Euphoria of being crowned the winners of the Panther Invitational Tournament at the end of August met a sudden end on the first day of September when the 2009 Lady Maverick volleyball team hosted seasoned and accomplished upstate competition back in the Upstate Tuesday evening.  A tri-match was held on the Mauldin campus with visiting 3A powers Riverside and Eastside.  Although the 3 competing teams were evenly matched and very good volleyball was on display in each of the best of three matches, Mauldin's netters failed to muster the come-from-behind magic that they displayed in Myrtle Beach last week.

In the evening's first match between Mauldin's Lady Mavericks and the Warriors of Riverside, the Lady Mavs opened the match with a decisive in behind the excellent setting of Sophomore Kayla Whitten. Whitten (10 assists, 6 Digs, 1 kill) distributed sets for kills to fellow Sophomores Laura Woodlee (4 kills, 3 Blocks) and Katie Faith (3 kills, 2 Digs) who tallied points for the home team in the game 1 win. The second game was the best of this match, featuring long rallies and great plays on both sides of the net.  The Lady warriors got into form and prevailed in extra points but not without stiff resistance from Kim Minor (10 assists, 1 ace, 8 Digs), Melissa Unger (8 Kills, 2 Aces, 2 blocks,2 digs), Co-Captain Heather Granger (4 kills, 14 digs, 1 Block, 1 Assist), and Dana Landers ( 28 digs, 1 Assist).  Co-Captain Jordan Stovall (3 kills, 12 digs, 1 ace, 1 block) and Chloe Ewing (7 Digs) paced the Lady Mavs in the third game and kept it close, but it was not to be as the Ladies in Blue and red prevailed again in extra points to decide the match.

      Game 1 -  Mauldin 25  -  Riverside 17
      Game 2 -  Riverside 26  -  Mauldin 24
      Game 3 - Riverside 16  -  Mauldin 14

In the second match of the evening the fans were treated to more great volleyball action as Riverside narrowly defeated their arch-rivals, the Eastside Eagles.  To the victors go the spoils, so fittingly, the Lady Warriors got to leave happily with a 2-0 match record before it was too late to get some dinner.

      Game 1  -  Riverside 25  -  Eastside 22
      Game 2  -  Eastside 26  -  Riverside 24
      Game 3  -  Riverside  16  -  Eastside 14

The third of the evening's matchups would be a "silver medal" match between Eastside's Eagles and the Mauldin Lady Mavs.  Both teams had played well but fallen just short in their matches against the experienced and talented Riverside team - Both teams had something to prove and plenty of motivation. True to form on this comfortable early Autumn night, the opening game of this match looked like another "Clash of Titans".  Long Points, back and forth, diving and driving spandex clad ladies lifted and pounded Mikasa's spheroid as if the match depended on each point.  It was another classic and the half of the attending crowd shouted their approval with each point.  When the dust and noise settled at the end of the first game, Mauldin was the victor. Senior setter Kimberly Minor (16 Assists, 9 Digs,2 Aces,1 kill) led the Lady Mavs to the game 1 victory with offensive help from fellow Seniors Jordan Stovall ( 10 Kills, 4 digs, 1 block), Melissa Unger ( 4 kills, 3 blocks, 2 digs, 1 ace), and Christina Brown (1 kill, 3 digs, 1 assist).

Unfortunately the momentum shifted in games two and three as the Eastside attack proved unrelenting and less prone to errors than the ladies in White and Orange.  The Mauldin defense  never quit - they played hard to the bitter end as again long rallies were the rule...but alas, too many of them ended in frustration and with one or two Lady Mavs on the floor.  Very good performances in defeat were turned in by Lady Mavs Captain Heather Granger (13 digs, 5 kills, 3 blocks), Dana Landers (19 Digs, 2 Aces, 1 kill), Laura Woodlee ( 5 kills, 1 Block)., and Brandi Cessarich (3 Digs).

      Game 1  -  Mauldin  25  -  Eastside 21
      Game 2  -  Eastside 25  -  Mauldin 19
      Game 3  -  Eastside 15  -  Mauldin 9

The 2009 Lady Maverick volleyball team will hit the road and face Greenville High across from Fluor Field on Thursday evening at 6:30 pm.
Coach Christie Plecha's and our young 2009 Lady Maverick Volleyballers have 4 matches and 2 + weeks to work out a couple of kinks and hit their top form before embarking on Region play in the toughest region in the state.  They have shown both flashes of brilliance and stretches of sloppiness in the pre-season and opening season matches, but their best still lies ahead of them.  Come support our Lady Mav volleyballers against the Red Raiders Thursday evening as they get back on track and in their groove before mid-season.  Go Mauldin !
