MAULDIN WALLOPS WESTSIDE 11 - 0, ADVANCES IN DISTRICT PLAYOFFS
TO FACE CLOVER MONDAY 5/4/09

After 2 days of precautionary delays and under threatening skies, The
Lady Mauldin Varsity Softball team FINALLY got to open the District Playoff
Tournament at home against the Lady Rams of Westside Late Saturday evening.
The 7:30 start time allowed some showers to pass through before 6:00 and a
nice sized crowd to be present for the first round contest between 4A
Region 1's Westside and Region 2's Mauldin.
As the game began, it was Mauldin's Ace Ashley Bagwell and the Lady
Rams infield that looked sharp. In Westside's first three offensive frames,
Bagwell struck out 8 and saw a line drive caught by her second baseman,
Bria Barnhill.  Westside's only baserunner through 3 innings was via a
base-on balls to Lady Ram third baseman, Acacia Garcia with one out in the
third.  The Lady Mavs bats began the bottoms of the first two innings a
little quiet...perhaps showing the effect of not being able to play or
practice since early last week.  Sophomore Dana Landers became Mauldin's
only baserunner in the first when she took a base on balls with two outs.
Ashley Bagwell ripped a two-out double down the leftfield line in the
bottom of the second. Like Landers, the pitcher's pinch runner, Junior
Weslyn Jones, would not advance.  After 2 full innings - Mauldin 0 -
Westside 0.
It was the bottom of the third when the Lady Mavs showed that they
had solved the heretofore very effective Ram Senior pitcher, Kayla Hipp.
With one out, Junior centerfielder Kenzi Corn drew a walk.  An out later
with only one left and a runner on first, Co-captain Dana Landers drilled a
shot through the 5-6 hole to move Corn to third and herself to second -
Nice to have two runners in scoring position but there were still two outs
and no runs on the board...  Junior Catcher Jordan Stovall re-moved her
shin-guards and took her place in the right hand batter's box.  In came
Hipp's first pitch and BOOM !  Even more quickly it left the confines of
Clayton Field, left of and just below the level of the American Flag waving
in centerfield.  Corn and Landers crossed the pentagonal base in front of
Stovall as she met her jubilant teammates at home plate after the big 3 run
homer.  Although a tough act to follow, 8th Grade DP Brianna Davis singled
up the middle and Junior First baseman, Amelia Gillentine walked before the
third out was recorded.
Confident now that she wouldnt have to do it alone,  Bagwell let her
defense get some work in the top of the fourth.  Senior captain and third
baseman Haley Register fielded and rifled to Gillentine to notch the first
out and then Freshman Bria Barnhill made nice successive plays and throws
to first to retire the Lady Rams in their fourth.  In Mauldin's fourth,
several other Lady Mavs joined the hit parade. Senior leftfielder Jena
Westmoreland  beat out an infield single and stole second to get into
scoring position. Junior rightfielder  Brooke Barnhill moved her over and
drove in her fellow outfielder when the Ram's shortstop's throw was high
and wide to first.  Landers drew another walk and Stovall rapped a single
into left to score the elder Barnhill.  B. Davis banged another single up
the middle - this time scoring Landers for an RBI and a 6 run lead.  An
attempt to score Stovall's aggressive courtesy runner, Sophomore Jessica
Lyles, failed when a nice throw from center resulted in a close play putout
of the sliding #17 at the plate.  Mauldin 6 - Westside 0 after 4 complete.
Westside surely sensed the urgency to strike back and cut into the
run deficit they faced to the now hot-hitting Lady Mavs.  The problem was
that they would have to do so against Mauldin's 2008 All-state pitcher.
Bagwell was in nearly top form on this night with help from a great game
called by Catcher Jordan Stovall.  In the top of the 5th, the Mav battery
of Bagwell and Stovall struck out all three Lady Ram batters in order.
Through 5 innings of work, Bagwell had struck out 11, given up no hits, no
runs, and only a solitary and harmless base on balls marred what was
otherwise a perfect game !
That would prove all that the tall Mauldin righty would need to do on
this Saturday night.  In the bottom of the 5th, in spite of two quick
infield outs against the Lady Mavs, another late rally was about to erupt !
Register stroked a single just right of centerfield.  Then pressure from
the speedy and approaching Westmoreland at first on an infield grounder,
cause the Westside first baseman to misplay the throw and there were two on
for the top of the Lady Mav order.   A infield single by Corn loaded the
bases and brought Brooke Barnhill to the plate with two outs .  The junior
roped a clutch single up the middle that scored Register and Westmoreland,
gave the rightfielder 3 RBIs in the game,...and put Mav batting leader
Landers at the plate with 2 on and 2 out.  Rams pitcher, Kayla Hipp had not
given Landers much good to swing at  in 3 previous at bats, walking the
Sophomore twice, but with Region 2's Homerun queen, Stovall in the on-deck
circle, Hipp would have to pick her poison - and she chose to pitch to
Landers.  Probably not expecting one, Landers took a first strike, then
watched balls high and outside.  On the fourth pitch, Hipp tried to get a
strike on the outside half, but Landers crushed it over the
right-centerfield fence.  The 3 run homer plated Corn and Barnhill ahead of
the Mauldin shortstop whose crossing of the plate tallied the lady Mavs
11th run (to none for the visitors), invoking the mercy rule, making
Landers shot a walk-off homer, and more importantly... sealing the first
round playoff victory for the Lady Mavs.
Mauldin advances to the second round to face Clover High School of
Region 3.  This game will be played on Monday evening May 4th back at
Clayton Field on the Mauldin High Campus - Time TBA.  Stay tuned to
GoMavs.Net for  exact time.  Congratulations to Ashley Bagwell on another
no-hit shutout ... to Jordan Stovall and Dana Landers on their homers and
multi-hit games, ... and to the coaches and all the lady Mavs team !  11
team hits, 11 runs scored with two outs, no errors in the field ...it was
an excellent game all the way around. The Mauldin Softballers have reasons
to be confident and proud...for a day !  Better teams are lurking ahead for
the Lady Mavs.  Come cheer on the Lady Mavs at home Monday against Clover
as they endeavor to continue their playoff drive.  Go Mavs !
