LADY MAVS BEAT BERKELEY TO ADVANCE 2-0
With morning temperatures in the high 30's and the wind
blowing, the Mauldin Bats were a little cooler on this day than they had
been on Monday !  Ashley Bagwell turned in another stellar performance,
shutting out the Lady Stags of Berkeley and allowing only 2 hits while
striking out 9 of the local 4A contenders.  Bagwell walked none and the
defense behind her was flawless in this game.  In the top of the third
inning, Berkeley's 8th batter led off with an infield hit and was moved to
second on a sacrifice bunt.  Then with 1 out and a runner in scoring
position, Mav second baseman, Bria Barnhill made a  diving catch of a bloop
behind the mound and tossed the ball to Shortstop Dana Landers covering
second base to double the runner off and end the scoring threat.
The Lady Mavs offense started off encouragingly when Leadoff
hitter Kenzi Corn reached first and then scored with one out after
successive singles by Landers and junior catcher Jordan Stovall.  Corn
scored again in the 5th when she drew a base on balls, stole second and was
driven home by Landers with a single into left-centerfield.  Stovall and
Senior leftfielder Jena Westmoreland also contributed hits in this game,
won by Mauldin 2-0 in Six and a half innings.
